| bike ~Video~ | daev May 24, 2002 10:12 AM | | This is from somewhere in, um, let's see... Northern Calinoia?... or at least that's all I can remember from after the neuralizer...
video (part 1) |
| Lame... | Biking Viking May 24, 2002 10:27 AM | | ...that you haven't posted any helmetcam vids before.
Excellent work, Dave. I was holding on to my chair here. That looked fast!
Are you and your camera coming to the Tahoe gathering?
BV |
| Stop it. | Fast Eddy May 24, 2002 10:36 AM | | We're going to need bunk-cots.
Of course you're welcome to come daev. It just so happens we have one more spot in the truck. We're leaving at 2pm on 7-11. You're going to have to snuggle up with PaulJ though...
BV, if you search back, you'll find two more video morsels by daev. Of course the stars of those vids aren't as good of riders as the star of this one. |
| Oh, and part II is even better. nm | Fast Eddy May 24, 2002 10:37 AM | | |
| if you'd been with us at rockville, ed... | daev May 24, 2002 11:12 AM | | ...you could've starred in that one too... (with maybe even more crash footage :)
besides the Rockville one, I did this one a while back at Sea Otter:
bikestunts.mpeg
I have a couple more helmet-cam vid's I did a while back I'll post someday - not as exciting though... |
| Oooo, I love Incubus! | Bonee May 24, 2002 11:22 AM | | Or, errrr, Stanky Hobos. Any crash video from the stunts, besides that one from the track where the one guy crashes and the other guys hits hit? |
| That video was very cool. Do you or anyone you know have more.. | AZ-X May 24, 2002 11:44 AM | | footage from the Mountain Cross races? My friends that went only have video of the cross country, trials and jumping. |
| sorry... | daev May 24, 2002 1:31 PM | | I only attended for part of Sun afternoon and got maybe 10 minutes total of video (happened to be at the right place at the right time for the demonstrations). I would have loved to get the jumping contest and more mountain cross - maybe next year... |
| This video sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Paul J May 24, 2002 11:19 AM | | It only shows the guy on the Id for a few seconds. Who in the hell wants to look at red hardtails???????????..........Mabey next time I'll ride slower.........blame the bike Paul...just blame the bike........ |
| Hey Ed................................. | Paul J May 24, 2002 11:43 AM | | Your heart may belong to God, but yur ass belongs to me. |
| Oh great. | Fast Eddy May 24, 2002 1:03 PM | | Now everyone thinks you're gay. |
| The problem with this video | Bonee May 24, 2002 10:39 AM | | It simply isn't long enough. That was a sweet 3:30 minutes. Where in NorCA is this?
Applause on the non-mainstream music too. Fits well with the riding, but coulda been sweet with a hardcore Jenna scene too. |
| That was great. Liked the music too. | troy May 24, 2002 10:40 AM | | Keep 'em comin. |
| liar | Bonee May 24, 2002 10:43 AM | | I heard you had no taste in music. You don't even like Rush. What's next? Trashing Bananarama? |
| re: bike ~Video~ | DIRTJUNKIE May 24, 2002 11:11 AM | | Great video I like how the branches hit your helmet & camera nice sound effect's from you. That tune is killer who is it?I cranked it all the way up sound's great with a sub woofer. |
| nice job | AK Ken May 24, 2002 2:55 PM | | and good choice in soundtrack.
I don't ordinarily invest two hours and fifty seven minutes for 3 minutes of video, but the computer was on and I was around the house anyway, so i just let it load and voila! Movin pitchers! What'll they think of next?
Thanks for putting it together.

| You have the tin-can-string internet deal too.....NM | Battman42 May 24, 2002 3:08 PM | | |
| 3hrs - ouch!... | daev May 24, 2002 3:19 PM | | I really feel for people with slow connections (but I work for a computer networking company - it's in my best interest to create more bandwidth demand on the internet ;-) Maybe I should make two versions - one for high BW and one for low BW connections. It's painful enough as it is to see it compressed to around 20MB size (for me that is, compared to the original version), but if enough people prefer a lower-grade version I might consider it... glad you enjoyed it and I hope it was worth the wait! |
| I wait and watch at work..... | Battman42 May 24, 2002 3:23 PM | | I hate compressing my photos to get them on the web from my house.

| Loved the Video...... | Battman42 May 24, 2002 11:24 AM | | It is inspiring to me, as I have done some Video editing on my PC.
I'm stuck at work this weekend so between ride videos and "Return of the Dorks" I'm well entertained.
Thanks

| It about freaking time !! | DHGuru May 24, 2002 12:09 PM | | Finally, someone who has obviously taken classes and knows what they are doing. Pete, email this guy if you need any help. You could learn alot from him!
Nice video man! |
| no classes... | daev May 24, 2002 1:39 PM | | ...I just spend a LOT of time tweaking the clips to fit the music the best I can. Some fit together quite well by accident (like the bikestunts one), while others just don't work no matter what I do. All part of the joys and frustration of doing this sort of stuff... Maybe some day I'll try taking a class - but if it stops becoming fun I'll stop doing it and just ride instead... |
| ps... | daev May 24, 2002 1:49 PM | | While I don't agree with everything Pete says and does, most my motivation and ideas for doing this came from Pete's videos and his website, which I'm sure he has spent a great deal of time on - and which I appreciate even more so now that I've done some of my own. Glad you enjoyed it and if you develop your own, please share - I love to see other people's approaches and ideas... :-) |
| ps... | JanowskiHead May 24, 2002 2:17 PM | | Want a towel to wipe your nose now? |
| That was... | Stine May 24, 2002 12:33 PM | | FLIPPIN' EXCELLANT
The flow was great. Music was mesmerizing.
Can I have some more please? |
| too much of a good thing gets boring, imho...... | Hello-Goodbye May 24, 2002 1:40 PM | | otherwise it looks pretty much like Pete's stuff without anything technical whatsoever.....y a w n |
| Yea, no kidding. Please don't share anymore... | Fat-tire May 24, 2002 2:45 PM | | Geez, if you don't like it, keep it to yourself. I really don't care if you don't like it. I do.
Personally, I find it refreshing to not only read about somebody's ride, but also watch it. |
| SCHWEET! | red-haze May 24, 2002 6:30 PM | | I really like how you are able to convey the swooping motion...wondering now, you have your camcorder mounted to the helmet, are you using an additional wide angle lens? perhaps not as I don't see wide angle lens distortion at the sides. hmmm...may have to rethink some of my own shots...
I know the PERFECT trail near hood river to try it out on...jsut wish I wasn't working this weekend.
Great video, keep em coming!

| do-it-yourself setup... | daev May 24, 2002 8:11 PM | | I mounted my camera similar to Pete's setup - using ankle weights held on with zip-ties as a counterweight, but I went to home-depot and found some galvanized tin bracing for fence posts that was close to the right shape (with additional bending) to cradle the camera - basically a flat rectangular piece with two 90 deg bends forming a shape like this "]". I superglued wooden shims to the part of metal next to the helmet to try and make it fit snugly (match the profile of the helmet), then used zip-ties and already existing holes to fasten it to the helmet. Getting all the angles right so the camera pointed straight ahead took some fiddling with the shims. I used 1/4" foam packaging material between the camera and metal, and used part of an innertube stitched together as a big rubberband to hold the camera in - very simple and not pretty... The outside part of the camera is exposed but I don't think there's a good way to protect it for any major crash. I have a .45 wide angle lens attached to my sony pc9 - which I thought would be way too distorted at first, but I've decided wider is better for this type of thing. Perhaps I should take a picture of it someday...
I think I'll be near Hood River (Goldendale, WA) sometime around the 4th of July - maybe I'll contact you for some good trail suggestions! |
| so it is an additional wide angle lens.... | red-haze May 24, 2002 9:38 PM | | somehow I'm just gonna have to figger out some kinda image stabilization.
I bet you had fun putting all that together, just goes to show that the possibilities with zip-ties are endless.
I'm working thru July 4 week(nightshifts even!) but when it gets closer bive me a holler ( bob@NOSPAMred-haze.com ) and mebbe I can point ya to some neat stuff in Hood River (Post Canyon!!!!). Its somewhat doubtful that the great trails in the nat'l forest will be open by then, way too much snow pack this year. Ape Canyon is a maybe, Norway Pass should be open (south facing open slope). you can get an idea of norway pass from the video.
Ifn yer gonna be in goldendale, stop by Maryhill museum and Stonehenge.
bike ON

| Goldendale....... Our new powerplant..... | Battman42 May 25, 2002 7:43 AM | | After I replied to your Nuke reply above I read this one and we have a new plant going in in your neighborhood.
I am coming up end of July first of Aug to ride with Oldschool and other coworkers in the Hood river area. Oldschool works developing our plants. He is down here this week and we met and rode Mt Tam thurs.
I'll be firming up my plans in the next couple of weeks.
Hope to ride with you when I'm up there.
