| interesting malfunction on tonights ride... | airwreck Jun 14, 2002 11:50 PM | | while negotiating a rocky line, the kind of line that one shouldn't be riding alone, with darkness approaching, I found myself flying one direction, my bike another, and my now unattached rear wheel!? finding it's own new line. After a short hike to retrieve the wheel I began the reassembly process, not suprised to find a severed derailer hanger, after all this is one of those giants, and it's been bent before. I just never expected it to break that high up in the dropout area. While putting the wheel back, something else seemed missing, and one squeeze of the brake lever verified.... my disc brake pads were gone! And nowhere amongst the rocks and the leaves in the dim light of the jungle could I find the damn things. Eric/emailing Avid now, looking under rocks tommorow. |
| Interesting indeed! | AK Ken Jun 15, 2002 5:50 AM | | VERY interesting for a moment or two, I'll bet! I've considered the consequences if the front wheel became independent, but never the rear.
Last week in Anchorage I spied some Avid replacement pads hanging on the peg board at REI, and I thought, yeah, we should probably have some of those along, as Clare was on a 3 day adventure with the WOMBATS, so I grabbed two pair and put a pair in each of our tool bags.
I was thinking more along the lines of wear or contamination on multi day rides, or of them dropping out of the front while on the roof rack, but now I have another "what if" to apply them to if needed.
Glad you're functional enough to tell us about it.
I didn't lose the rear wheel, but I once had a pannier come loose on a moose trail and the "S" hook grabbed a spoke and ceased rotation of the rear wheel in a dramatic fashion. I was on the ground well before I figured out I had a problem, and yours must have been even more of a surprise.
What about the frame?

| found 'em! | airwreck Jun 15, 2002 9:50 PM | | waited for the sun to get overhead and headed back to the spot. After a few minutes I spotted one of them, those things sure are small, and their color matches the rocks and leaves perfectly. It had landed about six feet from the trail. Number two wasn't so easy. Spent almost twenty minutes crawling around, moving leaves and rocks, just as I was climbing back up to the trail, ready to give up, there it was, partially hidden under a leave, in a spot I had looked over several times already. metal detector would have helped.
