Warped Disc Rotor...now what?(19 posts)

Warped Disc Rotor...now what?Hollis
Jun 15, 2002 5:17 PM
Is there an easy way to fix a warped rotor? I've got a spare on order, but I would like to ride tomorrow with both wheels spinning freely.

I've already pressed the rotor in a BIG bench vise (samitched between two thin boards). I've even threatened it with a big hammer, but the braking surface is still warped about 2mm.

Any Ideas?

You think

i you

got problems? My discs have been rubbing since I've been running discs (Magura Julies/Claras and Hayes). My "favorite" trick is to pick up a wheel & spin it to show folks how much drag I'm overcoming to keep up with them.

Shake it off, champ, and ride. At least you

i can

ride.

Sheesh.

Go back to vee's; simpler, cheaper, easier to maintain. Lest you're a DHer or the like, discs are overkill.

PS: if you really want to create drag, vee's can do that too.

suspension (front or rear) is also not a necessity for riding.

There is a simple difference between the two options.

Vee's and Discs both stop the bike, but discs stop the bike better and more efficiently in specialized riding environments. They don't do a whole lot to improve the overall quality of the ride, especially when removed from their specialized environment (DH stuff or wet muddy riding conditions).

Suspension, on the other hand, does do a lot to improve the overall quality of the ride. It decreases back pain, neck pain, hand pain, wrist pain, and other pains. It helps you ride longer with less negative effects. Suspension is also not quite as specialized as disc brakes, since suspension becomes useful in most any trail with bumps/drops/roots/etc.

Conclusion- discs do much less than suspension to improve the overall quality of the ride unless used in special conditions where their benefits can be fully harnessed.

At least that's the way I feel...

After thinking of Your trials and tribulations, I wont even mention the squeeking Fox rear shock, the ever slipping Monkey Lite, and the new shorts that bunch and bind up in the dank ball sack area. My bike is just spiffy the way it is right now. So I'll ride, right away (well at 1st lite anyway)...sorry for the mini whine fest.

Think I could sell a few of these here or over at the Marketplace?

What do Russian authors have to do with warped rotors?

Guess I didn't know Balzac's first name was Dank, either.

Hope for the best is all I can say sounds like you've tried what needs to be tried. I've always just used my fingers but it never would last for me.(always came back to haunt me on the next ride) Drag is annoying but if you can get it minimized to a hiss and only a squeal after water you are doing good. I think. just my .02 cents.

....I've never seen a rotor yet that wasn't warped! From my Magura Cult Homepages -

"There are NO rotors that are dead flat and they can all be trued up. As rotors are a thin steel product they all tend to be somewhat warped - some more or less than others. But warpage is curable so don't freak out. Warpage that causes brake drag or "zinnnggggg" needs to be fixed and luckily that's quite easy. I true up ALL my rotors and can usually do them in two minutes. They don't have to be dead-on but just fairly close.

To true them look carefully down between pad and rotor - something white on the floor underneath helps - and decide which spot is rubbing. Yes there may be more than one spot or even more than one side rubbing but just pick one. Rotate that spot 180 degrees from the slave cylinder. Grab the high spot with a clean rag and pull it or push it by hand as necessary. Do many little pulls rather than one big one. Test to see if this has helped but squeeze the brake first as the piston may have got pushed in. Repeat as necessary until you don't have any audible drag when you spin the wheel. Be creative here - use whatever manual technique is necessary to get the rotor straight - press with both thumbs, push with heel of hand, clamp small adjustable wrench onto the rotor and use this to gently pry or do whatever it takes to get the rotor straight enough to eliminate the drag or "zinngggg".

This is normally a quick job but I'll admit some have taken me a 1/2 hr or so to true.

If you touch the rotor with fingers then clean it with isopropyl alcohol before you ride. Any oil or grease, yes even body oils, is not a good thing."

There ya go.

wrench idea. I think you'll have better luck with an adjustable wrench, because you're able to adjust a small area without creating more problems by grabbing the rotor with your hands.

Like Mike says, a little "zhing, zhing, zhing, zhing" is fairly normal so don't sweat it. And they're still better than vees. :)

..Avid Mechanicals. Had 'em for a year and a half now with virtually no problems (with original pads too). I feel...well...you know...blessed!!!...sigh* Of course I have a hard time show up with a Schwinn (no..it's NOT a Pacific) with mechanicals, but ooooh what a ride!!! (knock on wood).
