| A 2 mile ride (aka my Jekyll SUCKS!) | Finch Platte Jun 16, 2002 11:49 AM | | Gee, you were unaware my bike sucks hippo balls? ;0)
Annnnnyway... I wanted to do a local ride, so I could take my Dick out. He hasn't been out running for a while, so I decided to go to Hogan, a 'mere' 45 minutes away, so he could run to his heart's content, and jump in the water when need be.
So, I let a few friends know of my intentions, and Cheryl answered the call. She hadn't been on dirt for a few months, so she welcomed the opportunity to get off the road bike and onto her mountain bike.
Heeeeere's Cheryl, in happier times- about 20 minutes before disaster struck.

| The Lefty and the damage done. | Finch Platte Jun 16, 2002 12:08 PM | | I followed Cheryl down into a small gully, at a pretty good clip. Coming back up the other side, I hit a rocky lip, and a loud snap came from the fork. The fork compressed onto the tire, stopping all forward momentum instantly. Needless to say, with a loud exclamation of dismay, I went over the bars (OTB, for you newbs), onto my chest. *oof!*
When I picked myself up and dusted off, I assessed the damage. Bloody wound above the knee, a knot in the back of my left calf, and my hand hurt. I looked at the bike, and the lockout at the top of the Lefty had blown completely off and was a few feet away in the weeds. The fork had collapsed totally, and the only thing I could do was tighten it so I could turn around and ride back out. When I tried to clip in, I found one of my new Shimano 959s was broken.
i sh!t!
I was pissed, but thankful I hadn't lost a few teeth on the bar. Seems like that's always the way- my bike breaks, but I'm relatively uninjured, and I'm thankful. Guess I should get rid of it before it's too late, and it
i really
focks me over.
Hear me, and hear me now, Cannondale- this bike is a
b PIECE OF SH!T!
You OWE me, and you
b owe me BIG!
I can't afford a new bike- I'll have this fixed once again, but the next time it breaks, and the next time after that, the world will hear my story, and you'll lose a few more customers.
i I am your worst nightmare.

| Jeeezous! | Bkrgrl Jun 16, 2002 12:14 PM | | Wow Gary! I'm glad you're ok. Want some beers to drown your pain?

| I'm workin' on it ;0) | Finch Platte Jun 16, 2002 12:17 PM | | But expect a call ;0)
fp |
| Do you want a Z1? | Twilight Error® Jun 16, 2002 12:15 PM | | Measure your headtube and get back to me. I've got a '99 Z1/ Louise disc/ Mavic wheel that I was going to sell *but the buyer has yet to get back to me, so if I don't hear anything by the end of this week...* Its yours until you can afford a new bike. When you get a new bike though, I'm going to need it all back. |
| Thanks, but... | Finch Platte Jun 16, 2002 12:26 PM | | I'll need time to think about that. Will it fit on this $69 Nashbar steel frame I'm about to get? ;0)
Appreciate the offer!
Gary |
| The wound. | Finch Platte Jun 16, 2002 12:16 PM | | Before cleaning and throwing it on the BBQ.

| Duuuuude! Ya want me to send ya a replacement fork? | AK Ken Jun 16, 2002 12:26 PM | | It's got two legs, but it's genuine Cannondale.
We could air freight it to you on the CODA rotor chopper.
Ken |
| Hmmm...Is that too much time or too much money?? | ironlegsracer Jun 16, 2002 5:50 PM | | Or both!
Pretty cool.. |
| That Bites..Must be some bad Karma.... | Rollingbones Jun 16, 2002 1:32 PM | | ..for NOT letting me know about the ride. I would have loved coming down. I haven't done Hogan for a long time now, but then, I wanted something longer than 4 mile ride so I guess that wouldn't have worked. I ended up just staying in town and doing a 46 mile ride along the American River. Twas nice..no mechanicals..no endo..nice swim in the pool after the ride...being taken to Home Town Buffet tonite for Father's Day. Dirt Karma!!! |
| Say it with me FP: "Santa Cruz"... | K-Zero Jun 16, 2002 2:30 PM | | Sorry to hear about your Cannondale again! When you do get the funds for a new bike, you won't go wrong with Santa Cruz....at least in terms of customer service and durability. My doctor broke his S-Works almost as frequently as your Jekyll until he finally gave up and made the move to Superlight. Let's just say he's one happy rider.
K-Zero |
| Sorry to hear it.... | Monte Jun 16, 2002 2:36 PM | | you've got to figure a way out of that bike before it kills you.
I think you're one of C'dales worse customers, somebody that actually rides the bike a lot, and hard.
Monte |
| Oh man... | Spiff Jun 16, 2002 3:03 PM | | I'm sorry for your bad luck with that bike...is there a part of it you havent broken yet ? geeez. I'd write a letter to the company president, seriously, not ranting, badmouthing or threatening them, but just telling you saga with the bike and all the problems you've gone through. Be very specific regarding the problems would be good also. Even knowing that I wouldnt get a new bike because of that I'd do it anyway.
Good luck with the bike,
Gui |
| Sorry, FP, jeez.... | JimC Jun 16, 2002 6:05 PM | | I'm hoping the Cannondale dewds are reading this and step up to the mark, you've had more than your share of bad luck, bad karma, and just plain bad.
Hope things work out better in future, Jim |
| I feel partly responsible | Jm Jun 16, 2002 8:21 PM | | cause we were asking you about the "one thing" that hadn't failed on your bike a few weeks back..
We must have set up bad mojo.
Plan;
1. Get crack-pipe-n-fail fixed
2. SELL bike, maybe for a nice ice cream bar.
3. If you make enough money from selling, then BUY a new bike.
4. If not, at least you have a yummy ice cream bar! |
| Riding in fear | Zaphod Jun 17, 2002 8:26 AM | | How can you ride a bike blazing down some hairy section if you're questioning the integrity of the parts? I can't do it. CannonWhale certainly owe's you on this one. I tended to think that they were solid bikes, maybe a bit heavy. But hearing this is a drag. Not that *I'm* in the market for a mtb, tons of people ask me "What should I get?" & I'll steer them away from the Cwhale. Hope they take care of you.
I used to have a superV years ago with a big aluminum swingarm. I actually enjoyed it until I went back to steel.
Zaphod |
| You are only part of their nightmare... | fourarm Jun 17, 2002 8:30 AM | | This chart is their true nightmare. They are running the company into the ground and may not be around much longer to continue replacing your frame/fork/parts. Move on to something else...NOW. I would be interested in a pic of your 959. |
| Broken 959 pic | Finch Platte Jun 17, 2002 9:13 AM | | Is that chart from Letterman? (Charts & graphs ;0)
Not a very good pic of the pedal- but I can't take another cuz the bike's in the shop.
You can see the lower part of the pedal where it's broken- the spring broke, allowing the plate to flap freely. I have no idea how it broke- the only thing I can think of is that when I went OTB, I unclipped w/out turning, and the force was too much for the mechanism.

| re: A 2 mile ride (aka my Jekyll SUCKS!) | wallace wackerton Jun 16, 2002 12:48 PM | | Trust your mechanic. |
| Just wondering... | East Coast Roast Jun 16, 2002 2:19 PM | | What happened to the 959 you broke? |
| D'OH!!! and we figured it would be the back end that went first | KonaMan Jun 16, 2002 2:22 PM | | damn dude, that sucks... I feel your pain as I've been breaking everything lately... bummer... |
| at least your jewels are intact... | fireboy Jun 16, 2002 3:16 PM | | ...nice shorts aren't they??
=]
I feel your pain...time to start pestering Cracknfail...good luck!!!

| Hey Hey, My My is that bike is a POS! | Howard Roark Jun 16, 2002 3:24 PM | | Sorry to hear it man. Broken forks blow, literally. Looks like you blew the damn thing to pieces.
What could Cannondale possibly do for you now? You obviously won't be happy with another replacement, as it will probably break in the future. They should refund you, you've put up with their cr@p for long enough.
HR |
| How did that second 'is' get in there? nm | Howard Roark Jun 16, 2002 5:13 PM | | . |
| That's too bad. Something evil resides in that bike. I suggest.. | Biking Viking Jun 16, 2002 4:37 PM | | ...you send that peddle to Shimano for a warranty replacement.
They replaced my 3-year old XTR cassette no Q's asked.
As for the bike ... no obvious suggestions come to mind.

| Dude, you deserve some good karma!! | radair Jun 16, 2002 5:20 PM | | Got the disk today (I guess it came yesterday, but we didn't check the mail)! Thanks so much!! No one deserves putting up with the crap you've been through with that rig. Hope things get resolved and you can replace the POS somehow. Definitely let the brass at C-dale know what you've been through.
P.S. Major bonus was opening the CD case and finding mtbr stickers. Cooool. |
| And you made fun of my Fisher! | brianc Jun 16, 2002 5:21 PM | | Sorry to hear your tales of woe. Again. Just keep dreaming of the day you can replace it.
Mmmm Turner. (repeat that 4 or 5 thousand times)

| Gary, Gary, Gary. Over two years ago I warned you. | Pete. Jun 16, 2002 7:23 PM | | ...about the real intent of the Crackandfail warning sticker that is on their bikes.
Bummer.
I hope it all works out. |
| one has to wonder about all the referances to "cracked frames" | Jm Jun 16, 2002 8:24 PM | | Hmm.
Anyway, that bike came from my old LBS i think, bikeUSA.
Cannondale puts small mind control computer chips in their frames, causing the rider to only buy cannondale, no matter what. |
| sure, go ahead.... | Hollis Jun 16, 2002 7:24 PM | | make ME feel guilty for having a Great Ride. I'd be happy to sign a Petition to C'dale...stating something like you deserve a new frame/fork of your choice from the bike shop of your choice (does Slarts carry Ellsworth?)
Sorry to hear you've had even more problems with the Jerkyll. |
| glad to hear your OK... | bigboulder Jun 16, 2002 8:36 PM | | damn....throw that thing in the trash or cut it up into little pieces and ship it off to Cdale. It's BLACK DEATH!!.....don't bring that hunk of crap to Tahoe....
GET NEW BIKE NOW!!! |
| Thanks, all- I appreciate the support. | Finch Platte Jun 16, 2002 10:46 PM | | Over 1,000 people checked out this post- hopefully at least one potential customer will be spared the grief I've been thru.
fp |
| Your trials with that bike have been a eye opener..... | Battman42 Jun 16, 2002 10:53 PM | | I've only seen one of those bikes in person. A rider from Marin brought one up to Boggs about a month ago.
Rest up and get that Knee heeled, your dog is going to get nervous waiting to run again.
Tim
BTW My brothers house is about 1/2 mile away in that picture you posted. |
| Sorry, "an" eye opener.... | Battman42 Jun 16, 2002 11:17 PM | | My typing gets erratic when the midnight report is almost due.
Tim |
| You'll have it fixed once again???? | tlg Jun 17, 2002 6:40 AM | | So the next time it breaks, you WILL loose a few teeth? Or maybe worse?
I think I'd cut my losses, sell the parts on ebay (my conscience wouldn't let me sell the bike to someone), and get a new bike. |
| Good point. (ntm) | Finch Platte Jun 17, 2002 8:10 AM | | no toothless message |
| bummer..cdales are getting | Earthworm Jun 17, 2002 8:33 AM | | much less desirable around the pisgah area because of the lack of reliability. Fast bikes, you bet, but not if you are walking.
I am more pleased everytime i ride my 38# rm-7 xc bike. I`ts a great work-out and can really take a lot more abuse than i will ever give it. |
| once again, they earn the name "Crack and Fail" | gonzostrike Jun 17, 2002 11:14 AM | | sorry to hear it FP. what do you think you'll get when you replace the Jekyll?
