actually just got back from a quick trip up there last week... the riding was amazing. rode a sick downhill- don't know the name, but it hooks up with post canyon. crazy BC style ramps and such towards the bottom. too rich for my blood. we also rode "dipsee do" or something like that. fun fun. watch the poison oak. its absolutely everywhere. have fun.
Thanks.... I'm Imune to the Poison oak in CA.....Battman42

If you from California, the North Shore of Vancouver will rock all of your beliefs about what mountain biking is, and what a "trail" is. It is steep, rutted, strewn with wet roots and sharp rocks, and it is all over the fall line. The "Planks" and "Bridges" that have become ubiquetously known as "North Shore" were originally build to string together semi-rideable sections, and to make completely unrideable sections (3-foot-deep mud holes, log crossings over 15-foot high logs, etc) seem almost rideable. Those so-called "stunts" were actually the easy way down the hill. And it is amazing to see the locals riding this stuff. The talent up there is shocking. So any trip to Vancouver requires a ride up to Mt. Fromme in North Vancouver (follow the Mountain Highway north until it dead ends and the gravel begins).

Also check out the local riding scenes in Whistler and Squamish (half way to Whistler). Lots of "epic" rides to be done. And if you get a chance, head into the B.C. interior and ride in the Okanagan (dry, dusty, long rides, beautiful weather and lakes to swim in) or the Kootenays (steeper hills, narrower valleys, thicker forests, Rossland and Nelson are both rare jewels).
Couple of suggestionsPainter

Where you ride kind of depends on whether you're looking for XC stuff or are interested/willing to do a some North Shore riding.

For XC, look at Squamish or Whistler. Squamish is about an hour north of Vancouver and Whistler is about two hours drive. There is XC riding around Vancouver, but it's probably not worth it if you're only in town for a few days.

Good trails in Squamish include the Alice Lakes trails (not very technical, but a good ride with a swimming lake at the end), the Powersmart trails and parts of the Test of Metal course (more technical, but not over-the-top).

There are lots of trails in Whistler. LeeL and Brodiegirl have a place up there, so they'd have a better idea of what to ride, but A River Runs Through It is definitely worth doing (not too technical), and the mountain bike park in Whistler is also fun.

If you're looking for an intro to the North Shore, Mt. Seymour is probably a good place to start. Grouse/Fromme and Cypress are a little more hardcore.

Have a good trip, and post again if you have more questions about shops or guide books.

I am an XC type also and did not really come equipped with skills or a freeride bike for the north shore, but Squamish I thought had a great mix of some bridge/log riding with nice XC trails. I enjoyed the Cat Lake and Alice Lake trails-there will be some stunts and extremely steep downhills but the challenge is fun and fairly devoid of 10 foot drops. Probably my favorite trail was powersmart, which is a pretty well known trail that you may like, and if you find a local, there are log rides/teeter totters that parallel a lot of the trail if you want to try a few of those. Have fun!
