I picked one of these up yesterday for a mere 30 beans. of course, it is in a lot worse shape than this one (more rust), but it is still rideable and has all the original parts, maybe minus the tires. I took it for a spin around the yard last night. the thing rides smooth, thought it's geared pretty high. anyway, i want to restore/rebuild the bike, but not necessarily with original or old parts. I don't plan to resell or make any money off of it, but rather just make it into a fun project. I want to sand and repaint it, though I'll end up painting over the logos. It still has the head tube badge though, which is nice. Has anyone taken on a similar project? and are certain parts, i.e. headsets, forks, and bottom brackets easy to find? i think the steertube is probably 1". are modern parts compatible? any information would help. I've been looking at ebay, but really don't want to spend a lot of money on the thing.

He does this stuff all the time. I've seen his before/after stuff and it goes from sh** rusty junk heap to gleaming new bike. I recommend that you *do* spend the money and go for a sandblast & powdercoat and swap out to new parts as needed. He's managed to to make it fairly cheap. I'd *love* to have a restored version of that bike... perfect townie.
