Fork question........(13 posts)

Fork question........ironlegsracer
Jul 13, 2002 4:01 PM
Ironlegs Jr. got his new bike yesterday.I'm still tweaking it.It's a 2003 hotrock 24 A1 24fs.Super nice.I've already put his frogs and XT stuff and on.I'm ordering the bars, titec hell bent.

My question is,the fork is too stiff for his 50lbs.It's an RST fork.I'm geussing aftermarket springs are not available even if so they may still be too stiff.I took the springs out of one side and it works good for him.You think that's okay or,do I need to go rumaging for some soft springs?

What are your opinion/ideas???

Thanks!

If his BMX race is rained out Sunday,I think we'll take it for a spin.

I dont believe it will be a problem...the 2000 Manitou Magnum only has springs in the left leg...as compared to the 2000 Rock Shox Judy Xc for example, which has two huge springs, which will in end make it stiffer....the only thing u may sacrifice is cornering to the side without thr spring, but im not sure (kind of like a Lefty from Cannondale), so yeah, hope you and your son enjoy. RIDE ON!

I'm going to run a Titec Hellbent Xc on my next project...good stuff

I've got a 2000 zoke z5 air that has a little steerer tube (came off a 15" hardtail) that I'd let go for cheap.

It's 3 or 4 inches, air, and works for little guys and gals very well.

Would it work with a 24" wheel???The frt. brake isn't an issue but,I don't want something that would goof up the geometry. His measures 16" from the headset race to the dropout.Oh this bike is a 1 1/8 steerer tube.
Nah, not unless you do disc.Zonic Man

If you go disc, no problemo on the 24" front.

Maybe mount him up a cheapie deore cable one or used hayes mechnical.

That'd be sick for him.

I think it'd be good for 80mm and not goof up geometry.
Hey Zonics(suzy related)Jm

Just wanted to let you know, she wasn't sure if they would return tonight or stay till tomorrow, but you would be PROUD, she was still turning the cranks(at something-thousand feet) when me and JFR were pushing up parts, not only that but she cleaned a lot of tech sections on Toads that were giving others in our group some trouble. She had a blast and I was glad she came up even though you had to study, too bad you couldn't be there but I think everyone made the right choice :)

Man, that was insane, you know you are pushing your limits when you have to STOP in the middle of a DOWNHILL section to take breath...

Toads is fantastic, it beat my arms to jelly though.

Wrap up with a few lame pictures later.
A few things to loook at, and - Hell Bent on a Hot Rock???Seb

Don't you think those might be a bit wide for the little guy? I', 6'3", and they are nearly more than I'd use trail riding!

As for the fork, I think it will work, although it may increase the flex a little. If the springs are designed to cause friction with the fork walls when compressed (some elastomers are), you'll loose some of the damping that provides.

Chances are the loads are low enough for the spring and fork, but focussing all thge strain on one spring may cause failure of related retaining hardware. RST har a problem with this and redesigned thier forks, but the new hardware may not be up to "one leg" springing. Check the assembly on a regualr basis, and you should be OK- it was a wear induced problem, not a sudden fracture, iirc.
