so what gives? You are riding the fence on this one, so dont fall onto their side. Sure I'm a newbie, but there are a few people here that think they're chamois dont stink. Why can't they be like AK Ken, mugg, etc who just post good stuff and dont feel the need to criticize or ridicule people all the time? Why? Because they get off on talking down to people, even on the internet.

As Passion turns....Ken in KC.
Jul 15, 2002 6:10 AM
I can't profess to having read all of your posts. I do know that you seem to bantering quite a bit with the Passion regulars, although Pete doesn't seem to have unleashed the hounds yet.

I forgot who it was, but someone posted a great analogy regarding "fitting in" last year with TNJed. (With apologies to ZM, what is it about people named Jed?)

Here it goes:

Passion, like it or not, is a social group. The only difference between Passion and a group of mountain bikers at a bar is that this forum is eletronic, and not face to face.

When you jump in and immediately try to force your opinions on the regular patrons of the group ride, you turn off a bunch of people. Why? Because socially, you are a loose cannon (if you acted like this in public).

As a person new to a group, would you try to instigate and force your views on a group of regulars if you were face to face? Or, would you kind of hang back, try to assess the group dymanics and throw in a couple of comments every now and then when they were appropriate?

I would hope that you aren't socially retarded and would choose the latter option. I would suggest taking that approach here. Like it or not, there are group dynamics involved with Passion.

I wouldn't suggest taking an "us against them" approach. I wouldn't suggest pointing the electronic finger at people and asking why they can't be more like this person over there. This is a simplistic and inane statement that will cause you to loose credibility with people, wether you were to ask it in person, or electronically.

I would suggest trying to think of Passion as a social mountain biking group that has its own set of interpersonal dynamics. If you like the idea behind Passion, and what it represents, then take a little time to get to the the group, before you start flame wars with some of the regulars.

I think what you will find is that people have more tolerance for those that they know (and have ridden with). As the new comer, you will be given less slack. Eventually, if you continue to butt heads with some of the regulars at every opportunity, you will piss the majority of the people off and be asked to go drink somewhere else.

If, on the other hand, you ease in to the drinking group, you'll wind up being a regular with whom people enjoy conversing.

There's a couple of cents for you. Take it or leave it.

Some of the virtues of being socially retarded.....Battman42
Jul 15, 2002 6:30 AM
After some painful rejections when young:

You begin to decide who you wish to be with and if it is worth the pain/joy.

You have the view from outside and can be more objective because you don't have any face to lose.

You don't have a constant desire to maintain your social position, not having one give a lot of freedom.

Above all you can gain humility and tolerance....

not social retardation. I think what Ken is talking about is the opposite of what you are talking about. Social retardation would have more to do with hurling insults at the drop of a hat, whining publically, and making sweeping generalizations about a very broad group of people.

Although you make it sound like we all get along famously. We don't, but there is mutual respect most of the time. There are a few passionites that don't particularly care for each other, but they don't constantly express it in every post. There are some pretty heated breakouts, but for the most part the mutual respect stands.

And some of us don't visit very often. What's up with MTBR and Chapter 11!? I just read the post announcing the situation, hopefully MTBR will recover.

Also, if you are still interested in that Suburban, you better give Chet a call. Actually, maybe drop him a message and follow up next week (he's getting ready to leave town tomorrow).
Of course, you're right....Ken in KC.
Jul 15, 2002 6:48 AM
The point, obviously, was that you should feel out the group before you show your ass. Something that seems to be lost on mtfire, who seems more intent on showing everyone pictures of boobies than anything else.

I tried to call Chet a couple of times, but I couldn't get through to him. You know, he is an international man of mystery, so I just figured he was busy.

Also, I mentioned something about buying the Suburban to his partner, and I received a somewhat conflicting vibe to the deal. Definately not something that I want to discuss here, though.

I'm in Canada for the next couple fo weeks, so I'm not extremely accessible.

As for Chapter 11, I don't have a whole bunch of experience with it, other than having a customer go through it. Essentially, Chapter 11 is set up to provide a corporation some prtection from its immediate creditors in order to allow then to restructure their finances and continue operations.

It's a tough and emotional time for the owners of the corporation, but in fact, the filing should be mostly transparent to customers and employees, assuming that a corporation can work out of Chapter 11.

My thoughts are definately with Francis right now, as I know the burden he must be under.

Ken

P.S. I'll give you (Chet) a shout when I get back in town to talk about the Suburban. Will he have cell coverage where he is heading?

And Ken, don't include yourself in the Passion IDIOT group along with celly, Fat-tire and Pete - r of course. You were right stating that this is a "social group" and it is meant for anyone who might want to express their opinions here. It is absurd to think that if you're not a "regular" that the passion dogs have a right - and will inevitably critique your every word. When "regulars" sit around and wait for a chance to promote a flame, is not what I call socially acceptable behavior. So let people express what they will - and if this is unacceptable to you or any of the other idiots - then there's no need to open any other posts - besides those in the "a$$hole club".
Ah men! You have to walk on egg shells around here...Jed

Jul 15, 2002 7:24 AM
If you had taken my advice and gotten to know the drinking group, you wouldn't have risen up and tried to pick a fight.

If you were to act like you did in the bar, you would have been percieved as the guy with the small brain and even smaller dick that couldn't joust verbally with one of the group and tried simply to beat him up.

Now, I don't know you, and I can't recall reading one of your posts before today, but the example you just provided sort of proves my point.

Please understand, I don't know if you are the small dicked sloped forehead type. I'm simply suggesting that from my viewpoint, that is how you came across in the post.

Considering I have at many times

- Been accused of being a disciple of that cocksucker, Pete.

- Been allied with that dickhead, Celly.

- Pissed off numerous new folks and Passion regulars for one reason or another (sometimes justified, sometimes not).

What I find mildly amusing about your response here, is that you seem hell bent on posting a bunch of tits and ass, yet are indignant when people suggest that you not post them here. What you are doing would be no different than breaking out a porno mag at a multi-gender group ride. Would you do it? Perhaps, you would, I don't know you. I do know that you would be asked not to bring the mag back, and if you didn't would be told that you weren't welcome.

I can say that I find it amusing that you can't seem to distinguish between social behavoir and prepubescent giggling and pointing at breasts.

Feel free to now lump me in with any of the other dickheads on the board. After all, I'm simply expressing my opinion.

Ken

P.S. Very clever play on words with Pete's name. You are shure to gain the respect of everyone here older than 13 with your rapier wit.
Hmmm...now that the analogies are flying.....MRfire - 1
Jul 15, 2002 7:27 AM
let me retaliate by insisting that the "porno" I post is actually artistic imagery - not so different then some of the adds in magazines (including Mountain Bike). If on this multi-gender ride "susan" pulled out a Glamour magazine - would you be interested? I by no means am degrading women - in fact, in a way, I would say I am promoting their athleticism....and beauty.

That's just my opinion.
So would Larry Flint....Ken in KC.
Jul 15, 2002 7:49 AM
"I would say I am promoting their athleticism....and beauty."

I happen to agree with you, by the way. I enjoy looking at women of all types. I especially enjoy healthy, fit, enegetic and smart women.

I don't however, ask everyone to look at my monthly issue of Naked Brainy Fit Chix magazine at every opportunity. Why should I? What I like regarding my personal preference in women is simply that a personal preference. I don't feel obligated to ask everyone to look at pictures that some may find offensive simply for shock value, regardless of whether I feel the pitcures are tasteful or not.

I wouldn't do that socially until I knew who would appreciate them and who wouldn't, right?

So why should a BB be any different, other than it provides some degree of protection, since you don't really have to tell people who you are. Until, of course, you start to meet the people in person, and then we cycle right back to the fact that you have to get to know people first, before you start imparting your "rights" uppon them, in my opinion.

Cant people be nice? There are a few people here that get off on being mean. Is that socially acceptable too? It shouldnt be. What good does it bring? Pete comes off electronically as someone who likes to make fun of people. And there area few people here that idolize him so they jump in. What is the point of that? Is it good for the forum? I wonder how many people are turned away because of the snobbish attitudes. Its like high school. Pete is the bully and he has some dweebs that hang with him because "its cool". Its actually pretty funny...and sad at the same time.

It doesnt seem to be like this at ridemonkey, bikemag, etc. You can post pretty much anything you want over there, without feeling like you will be chastized for it.
Justify your opinion any way you like....Ken in KC.
Jul 15, 2002 7:11 AM
The fact is, everyone in this world isn't nice. Pete, as it happens is a nice guy. I even consider him a friend. Does that make me one of his dweebs?

The fact is, you seemed to jump in and voice your opinion on matters without taking the time to learn about the group. Like Screampint indicated, not everyone here gets along or even likes each other, for that matter.

The difference between Ride Monkey and Bike vs. Passion is the length of time in which this board has been in operation. The relative new comers to the MTB BB scene are still trying to establish their indentity. Passion did that many, many years ago. If Ride Monkey and Bike BB's are around in ten years, they will be just as cliquey as Passion seems to you. To think that they wouldn't, after devloping a history of people is myopic.

As I suggested, if you like Passion, then take some time to learn the people. If you don't like it, and prefer Ride Monkey or Bike, then quite bitching and throwing temper trantums and just f'ing leave.

I was trying to hepl you out. Not because I'm a nice guy, but simply so I didn't have to weed through inane banter to get to the juice of the board.

I tried to help you out by suggesting that you stop to learn about the people in here before you started lobbing rocks.

You responded by saying that people are mean and you were just being picked on.

Now you suggest that Celly lick balls, that he is shallow (based on the fact that he thinks you are annoying [which his his opinion, which he is entitled to based on your posts]), and that if he treated you like he is now, in person, that you would knock him in the dirt?

fior Christs sake, go somewhere else if you don't feel like taking the time to learn the group. I want to read about Bob's first race, Tai's 24 hour support experience, see Pete's latest vidoes and pics, read Ken's ride write ups, look at an occasional picture from BT and above all, meet and ride with people who love mountain biking of all sorts. If this is you, then shut the f up and read for a while. I was going to post this as a reply to the drama produced from Jed's last post but I thought maybe you guys would get over it.

I'm sick and tired of all the people in this forum acting like antisocial teenagers.

So someone posts something you don't like. Maybe a pic of a girl with a bike. Maybe a link to a MTB related website. If you don't like it, let it go. I don't need to waste my time reading dozens your childish insults.

Some of us might enjoy pictures of girls on bikes. Maybe Jed's new magazine will be really well executed. Maybe he would have even offered to give MTBR some free advertizing. But instead people get on their high horse and flame the shlt out of him.

Some of you guys need to grow up.

I stopped reading a bunch of the other boards because they turned into flame fests. Passion was always great stories and conversations from people who share a common bond - their love of the sport. I hope this forum doesn't go down the same lines. Seriously guys, you're turning more people off from the site than you're doing a public service.

And now I'm going to take my own advice. This is the last post you'll see from me on this subject.

Dave
A Quick Point....Ken in KC.
Jul 15, 2002 7:33 AM
These "flame wars" don't even compare to some of those that transpired between some of the Passion regulars.

I assure you, that I am properly chilled. I'm simply suggesting to the new folks that they focus on posting bike stuff, vs. posting bike stuff with some stupid insult attached to it, then becoming indigant about people being "mean" when they receive a respond to their original insult.

Yes, I know that regulars do the same thing. The difference is that their posts are in context, for having learned about the other riders in the group before making a cutting remark.

Have you ever noticed how many regulars take exception to (insert Passion regualr here). They don't. They don't because they know the person posting.

Of course, if people can't see that, then they probably aren't from the deep end of the gene pool, are they?

This seems to happen every summer, and then it dies off once school starts, for some reason.

Ken
And another Quick Point....Jed
Jul 15, 2002 7:47 AM
For the record, none of the websites posted were "my" websites. I posted a link to a site I thought was cool, but feared that someone would think I was trying to advertise it or something. That iheartbikes.com site is not mine either, and that guy who posted the link was turned a way by a bitch slap from the masses.

I agree with this guy though, the Passion regulars do post alot of cool stuff, even Pete (videos, etc). But some of them sure like to jump all over people whenver they get the chance. This was what I meant by the "Passion Elite"...the people who think they own this board and if they see something they dont like or agree with, they go off on it.

time a newbie complained about how mean the passion regulars are, I could retire and begin my mountain bike world tour.

No offense, your handle is different, but you're posts are exactly like too many others before you. Pete usually only picks on people who post without giving real consideration to what they are typing. "My perfect mate" is a classic example of what I'm talking about. I assume he gets some sort of sick satisfaction from hanging people with their e-words. The newbies are usually all to eager to cooperate.

Watching this happen time and time again, I've noticed that people either ignore all the BS and continue to enjoy Passion, or they continue to "fight the fight" and stink up the board with flame wars and other useless tripe. You will endear yourself to more Passionites if you try to contribute something positive like posting ride pictures, or a write-up of a great ride. My guess is you'll continue to get shelled if you can't get past "hot chicks on bikes", and petty name calling. JMHO
