Anyone else mountainbike their asss off this weekend? I'm sliding under the desk now....no energy left to type with. Please, if you know what I mean, give a sign.

Yours in tired bliss,

It started raining Saturday morning and just stopped a few hours ago. Haven't been in the saddle since Friday. Friday night took us to Snowshoe for a live concert for Mountain Stage (syndicated nationally on PRI). I volunteered to help a friend run a 10K running race for Marlinton's big Pioneer Days celebration Saturday morning. Strolled around Marlinton after that checking out the lumberjack competitions, parades, antique auto shows, etc. The rest of Saturday was spent at a famous (infamous?) local party involving hundreds of pounds of live crawfish, other delectable treats, and of course, enough beer and moonshine to fill the Greenbrier river. Couldn't convince anyone to ride Sunday and the weather was too crappy to convince myself to go it alone. So we did what everyone else in the Mountain State does on Sundays...we drove an hour to the Super Walmart. But we did have a great authentic mexican meal in Lewisburg at Rio Grande. However, mexican food always tastes so much better after a ride. Headed back to Pittsburgh today to bring another truckful of stuff from our apartment, which we have to be out of by the end of the month. Which also unfortunatley means I will not be in Davis at the end of July for the on-again, off-again, gathering. Can't wait to get back tomorrow and hopefully start the cycle of daily exhaustion once again. I guess it could be worse though, I could be sitting behind a desk. ;)

Sounds like you're settling into W. Va life just fine. You're going to miss a fun one weekend-after-next. It's definately on now. Hopefully I'll be rested up by then.

expecting? What, are you leaving her all weekend while you go road biking all over creation? Surely that took you at least 5 hours? I'm not sure how pregnant she is, but if I were home percolating a baby for you, you'd be spending every weekend in honey-do mode. Anyway, that still counts. In fact, if you had spent all weekend chasing a two-year old around, that would count too. Looking forward to that?
Yes she is!McCracken

But since the SM100 is on my 30th birthday, she agreed to support me at the race and let me train while she is in cycling purgatory. What a woman! Unfortunately, my training is no excuse for getting out of the honey-do list and family cook. I only ride one day on the weekend, so it isn't so bad.

I'm so excited for you guys! When are you due? Can she not ride at all, or just not long/hard? My sister had a baby in April, and she had to give up running about 3 months in, because all her ligaments got too loose. Now the baby is almost 4 months, and taking the baby jogger in stride. Babies are awesome! My neice rules.

My friend Dana W. is a cat. 1 woman, and her baby is less than 3 months, but Dana is already back to kicking ass on the road, even while breast feeding. That baby just hangs on for dear life... not really, but I wonder if her breast milk tastes like lactic acid after Dana gets done racing. I am very envious, can't wait to be a mom!
December 10th......McCracken

She is tapering off the riding. At first she was alright, then we went to flat riding because her breathing would get out of control pretty quickly while climbing. Now she is getting bigger so the road bike is getting uncomfortable. We'll probably just stick to walking and swinging the golf clubs or something.

Now I have this picture of a woman racing on a road bike with a baby latched on....too funny!

Will you name the baby after me if it's born on the 11th?

After the baby, your wife is going to kick your ass on the bike. Dana said that she can keep her HR up around 195 for several minutes at a stretch now, post baby. Giving birth apparently makes you super-human.

Please e me if you are in the mood to play golf with me---I'd love to join y'all for a round. I have no one to play with. I've been trying to teach Jon but he's still a hacker. Not that I'm not.
That only averages out to a 2.4% grade. Wimp!DaveG

Wow, nice ride. You keep doing days like that and you'll definitely be prepared. So, that was what, 2-3 hours in the saddle? ;)

7 hours. I am still as slow as when we used to ride together! I was going to e-mail you to see if you wanted to come out to Thurmont, but decided to go it alone. Good thing, because Bush was up at Camp David and they had Central Park Drive closed off....bummer. I'll probably go out again weekend after next, so I'll keep you posted.

yes, i can and i did. of course, it doesn't take much to make me feel it. i made it out for a short yet good ride with my roommate on saturday, and a nice long solo ride yesterday in the rain and fog. the woods were so green and lush, with a constant mist in the air. it was a bit eerie at times as well as bit slippery, but i managed to keep the rubber side down.

i aslo spent a good bit of the weekend working on the schwinn cruiser i picked up last week. i even built my first wheel using the original hub. of course, it doesn't work but at least i tried. i think i did everything right, but i think the rim i used was bad and pretty bent to begin with. i also didn't have a truing stand. i'm gonna head to the lbs today to find another rim and give it another shot.

looking forward to the gathering.

Here's to tired people everywhere! I'm raising my coffee cup to you. Thought of you as I cruised through Frostburg Saturday on my way to the Briery Mountain race. Do you know a guy named Fritz? He's cool. Maybe he and christine want to come to the gathering? We should invite them.
Yeah!chili
Jul 15, 2002 5:30 AM
Yeah, i know fritz. He's an incredible rider, epecially on the road from what i hear. He's good on the trails too, endurance and speed wise, but lacks the tecnical skill. He lives here in frostburg. You should have mentioned you were passing through town. we could've met at gandalf's for a post race beer and some good eats. I'll mention the gathering to him. I don' think any of those guys hang out on this site, but i know i've mentioned it at least to chris. i don't see fritz much because he usually rides road and we hang out with different crowds. i've yet to convert, but it's coming. see my above post.
Well, no.Bikebreath

Got out on Saturday on the Gunpowder between Harford Rd. and Belair Rd. for a short technical 10 miler. Hit it hard and fast and got back to the car in 1.5 hours. My arms ached a bit, mostly cause I've increased my push-ups during the week.

The rain on Sunday allowed me to see the Minority Report...good movie. Afterwards the buds and I sampled Rob Roys and Rusty Nails at my place. Nothing like ruining good Scotch by mixing it.

My first trip back since the under-rated 24hr. race last fall. I love that course! Why don't I go up there more often? 1.5 laps and I was toast. I'll do it again next Saturday. Is it Friday yet? JASON! Do you want to go? Did a 3 hour flat ride with the family on Sunday. Ohiopyle is beautiful. Anyone know the trails around there? Steve

drop me a line at jmstakem@hotmail.com and i'll give you my number. most likely i'd be up for going, though i don't know if i'm at the same riding pace/level you are. i wouldn't want to hold anybody up. i won't know for sure though until the end of the week, but i'm definitely interested. i've only ridden there once. i am however carless a the moment. is that a problem?

rode from Laurel Mountain to Seven springs then rode the course and went back. All in all, it was 31 mile ride, legs felt like noodles but it was great. I would do it next weekend but the Vintage car race is in Pittsburgh next week and I just can't miss that.

From the West coast to chime in, and you're not tired, so I guess no tired people from the West can relate to having to get back to work after long, prosperous MTBing past the point of fatigue over the weekend? Maybe that's why you west coasters don't get tired -- we work harder over here in the East during the week.

Thinking of moving back west myself.

I was truly hoping that you were serious and that living on the West coast was somehow making you super-human and immune to fatigue. Guess I'll have to go back to plan B of having a baby to achieve post-pregnancy super-human powers.
All of the Over the Bars riders are tired.JRinCA
Jul 15, 2002 8:04 AM
We didn't do quite the amount of climbing BV did but we're probably just as tired. When you live at 600 ft and go and ride Tahoe with an average of 8500 ft, you get tired. (Being in shape helps as well!) We really enjoyed Star Lake and all the views from the numerous summits we crossed!

Toads rocks! Rode down the waterfall but not the following drop. Watched a fellow otber washout and eat a face full of redwood droppings at 35 mhp. Smacked a tree with my handle bars and kept going. Did in my middle chain ring. Going to replace my rear cassette with something other than an 11-28.

P.S. RoboJoe didn't get any video of Toads, but I think DAVE did.

because your post was sooo early.

I was late to work because of the time trial. I've been late every day since the tour started.

Did you race singlespeeds in Velo Bella gear? I did.
