Revenge of the Nerd, 26 years after the fact...Dirt Pilot

...Back in high school I was one of the nerdy kids. I played football and baseball but was always a B teamer and didn't see much playing time. We B squad players were always pushed around a little by the starters, some of them were nothing less then arrogant jerks...I met up with one of these jerks on the trail Friday and it was one sweeeet (for ME anyway) reunion.

Joe was looking fit, he was riding a Trek 9.9 and mentioned that he'd been doing some of the local races so I figured he was probably pretty fast. After the usual plesentaries came the call... LET"S RIDE!

I told Joe to go ahead and lead. He was doing allright up there for a guy in his 40s but I had no problem keeping up with him. Normally when I'm riding behind someone I leave a little breathing room between, but today I was out for some laughs and stayed right on his tail. I even tapped his rear with my front...BZZZT!...a coupla' times just to be a smart alek. "C'mon Joey (NObody called him that), let the dogs out!" I was saying. He got a little squirrley a coupla' times and I said "ya better not fall cuz I'm gonna run your a$$ over" (time for ME to be the jerk).

We came to a spot where the trail widened just before a steep short uphill where I made my move and dropped him. I continued on a ways and looked back but he was nowhere in sight. I waited a minute or two but still didn't see him so I went back to find him pushing his rig back the other way with his bars twisted at 90deg from the normal position. He sheepishly asked if I had a 5mm, I pulled off my pack saying "of course".

We continued on and came to the parking lot where we exchanged email ady's and high fived and said "good ride" (for me anyway).

Sunday night when I got home there was an email from Joe. He was asking me if I would be interested in being on a 4 man team for a local 12 hour rece that's coming up. I wrote him back to decline his offer saying that I and some friends were talking about doing that race together.

Needless to say my ride with my old high school "friend" made my day and set the stage for an inceredible weekend of riding. It's Monday morning and I'm back at work...everyone else has their Monday morning face on, everyone but me: )

Life in the saddle is sooooo GOOD!

Pretty amazing how vivid those high school memories can be long after the fact. Several years ago I went to my 10 year HS reunion and it was pretty interesting to see how people had changed. Jocks in HS now had beer bellies, nerds were now successful business-types, etc. etc.

Ricky and I hit Deer Grove on Friday after work and I got in a good road ride yesterday... I plan on heading down to Thornton again soon, either this weekend or next. Heard you had a pretty intense ride up at Kettle?

...At my 20 yr reunion I said to my wife "who brought their uncle?" hehe...it was the starting QB hehe.

Yup, Kettle was a riot. Got a place out towards Valporaiso/LaPorte you gotta check out. It's called "Westville". I'ts a 5 mile course of FAST swichbacky, motocrossy singletrack, we were averaging 9mph. You run it three or four times and you're DONE! We rode there Sunday and I'm still laughing, had a ball!

Let me know if you're coming down...the phantom bridgebuilders have been at it again in Thorton: )

Kettle was great this weekend, with the LATE ride, it wasn't very crowded. You can tell who's not from Illinois by the "give it up" posts. It's not about dogging an "old buddy" (wink-wink), I do that to my brother all the time. When we grew up, I got all the left overs, now the tables are turned (though my 'left-overs' are better than what he can afford). I see people from my high school days too, most are married and larger.

Sorry you were a nerd but I would bet you still are a bit of one! I am glad you were able to revel in keeping up with your x-enemy but he still wins cuz he was COOL!

...I'm the COOL one now. He's working what sounds like a crappy warehouse job driving a forklift and I'v done much better then that. He's divorced, 2 kids prolly paying big $$ in child support, I'v been happily married for almost 18 years. He's still living in the same town that we grew up in and it's BAD there now (white flight), I'm living in a more affluant area some distance away...I could go on.

At our reunions I noticed that most of the big jocks hadn't faired too well, They were hot sh!t back then but they ain't sh!t anymore.

I lost my nerdyness many years ago, I'm one of the cool kids now.
Let it go.Er!ck

Get over it. Life is to short to let things that happened in high school affect how you look at things and people your whole life. Don't act like he did in high school now, be the better person.

unbelievable that you are hanging onto that silly moment in time known as high school. well-adjusted people get way past that and know that it is filled with insecure teens who reveal their insecurity with bullying, snobbishness, and clique "superiority." Big deal.

I laughed at the cliquish losers then, I laugh at 'em now. The most obnoxious clique today is the "Former Geeks Who Now Make Decent Money," because they all seem to worry too much about whether they are living in the "affluent" part of town, and whether they can feel superior to the starting high school QB or the Prom Queen.

You and Cleatgrrrl would likely be good drinking buddies.
Yup, Cleatgrrrl sounds like a great gal...Dirt Pilot

...But as I said, I'm happily married and quite sure my wife wouldn't approve.

S'cuse, but I'v gotta go clean my coke bottle glasses now.

I'm sure 'they' made your life an intolerable hell all those years ago, but thats no reason for this: "He got a little squirrley a coupla' times and I said "ya better not fall cuz I'm gonna run your a$$ over" (time for ME to be the jerk)."

It seems you got older but didn't grow up. Most people loose the grudges at graduation, I feel sorry for the ones that need to hold onto 'em.

And no, I was never one of 'them'. I was about as far from that crowd as I could possibly get.
I tried growing up once...Dirt Pilot

...But I didn't like it and I swore I'd never do it again.

Heck, I'v told some of my closest riding buddies that I run them over if they fell, all in good fun. It's called "play racing", try it sometime: )

There was no big grudge here, I was friendly in HS with this guy even though he thought his s--- didn't stink, I hung out with a different clique and not being one of the "in crowd" never bugged me.

I'm going to hook up with this guy later this week for a little more friendly play racing...no grudges here. We'l take turns running each other over...but he'l have to catch me, all in good fun.
