I know that it has been discussed several times before, but I'm leaning towards switching:

Does a splined crank/bottom bracket interface really make much of a difference over the square-taper bb?

I can tell you that from my experience, it makes a BIG difference.

I have an LX Crank/UN72 setup on my Single Speed. I can actually bend the Chainring enough when I powerstroke to make the chain rub on the front derailluer. (I'm using the Front D. as a psuedo chainguide, it keeps it from falling to the outside).

My other two rides have the LX crank/ES70 Octalink setup, I can barely get the Chainrings to rub on the Derailluer. Much stiffer, and you actually feel the solidness when you pedal, it feels like more of your effort is gettting to the rear wheel.

Haven't extensively tried the ISIS platform, but I hear that's even stiffer.

While a splined system may feel more solid...Dave K

there will not be much (if any) difference in how much power is transmitted. One of my bikes has a XT Hollowtech and it does feel a bit more solid than my other bike with Cook Bros E-cranks (kinda wispy cranks) and XT BB, but I seriously doubt that I climb any slower because of crank/BB flex.

However, the splined BB's are probably stronger which is an issue if you are hucking 6 feet to flat landings.

Hope this helps.

only "cool" people run splined.

(Oh, if you're looking for performance-based opinions, I'm of no help. I currently have a LX cranks, and used to run Bontrager, and both seemed to work just fine for me.)

I've saved about 200gr between the RF turbine UN 72 set up i had and the trivativ stylo crankset and shook BB set up i have now. I dont feel/sense any flex or lack of strenght so to speak.
