| Even mountain bikers can be romantic... | namaSSte Aug 9, 2002 5:56 AM | | So yesterday is my wife's birthday and I hang up the bike in favor of.....a kayak! Now you may ask, how is a kayak romantic? Well, let me lay this plan on ya. We live right on Lake Erie so it's a great spot for sea kayaking (despite it not being a sea). I decide that instead of the the run of the mill, out to dinner for the birthday night, we are going to try something different. I line up the sitter to be at my house at 6:30 which gives me a little time after work to get a few other things arranged, food, wine, flowers, and friends. Well, the friends aren't actually going to be there but are an integral part of the plan. You see, their house sits right at the end of a private beach which, coincidentally, is just around the bluff from the yacht club where the kayak is. Perfect since the tiny little beach is very secluded and has a beautiful gazebo which sits on the hillside. I pick up some Chinese food (one of our favorites but rarely eaten since it's not exactly the most health conscious meal). Anyway, I figure, tonight we'd really live on the edge. In addition to the Chinese, I grab some of the world's best oreo cheescake from this little deli, and an arrangement of fresh cut flowers (with fresia - her favorite) and I drop it all off at my buddie's house. He is in on the plan which is still unbeknownst to my wife.
So I get home, give her the flowers and let her know that we are going to take the kayak out and she is stoked! We have a tough time getting out on it alone because of the kids so this is a real treat. The weather is perfect! 75 deg and no humidity. Right before we head out she says mentions how great it would be if we had thought tpo bring some wine. She then goes insisde to use the ladies room. Perfect again! I get the wine out and a couple of glasses and have it waiting when she gets back. I can tell she's starting to be impressed. So we have some wine and get the kayak in the water. On a side note I did have one little mishap....as I went to push us away from the dock, my hand suddenly felt a strange sensation. A soft squishy feeling between the fingers.....ackkkk, goose sh!t!!!! Anyway, I clean off the goose dung and off we go. We are both feeling great and finally relaxed. No kids, great night, things are going just right.
As we paddle out and round the bluff, we see the gazebo. Juli has never really noticed it before since we don't ususally head out this way. She mentions it to me. I act casual but slightly interested and sugget we stop to check it out an perhaps have another glass of wine. She's game so we paddle over and pull the kayak up onto the shore. There's no one else around so it's really great. Well, as we walk up into the gazebo she notices that something is going on. There is a set table with our dinner waiting for us! My buddy comes through!!!!! We proceed to have a great dinner looking out over the lake from our perch and all seems right with the world.
Eventually we wrap things up and head out onto the lake. It was shortly after that we were treated to one of the greatest sunsets I've seen in a while. A perfect way to bring things to a close. We had a nice walk around the yacht club after we got back in (I carefully avoided the goose gifts on the return). Stopped for some coffee on the way home and did some window shopping at these little boutiques (ack!, there weren't even any bike shops to look at but man those bridal gowns were beautiful - yes, I think I actually might have said that to her).
Back at home, the kids are sound asleep, the sitter leaves, and we.....well, I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
When it wa all done, the night went off without a hitch and was incredible! MTB content? It made me realize you actually can have fun off the bike although my bike wa giving some dirty looks this morning - I think it knows what I did!
Just thought I'd share something a little different with you all.
Peace and light.
