BV will be bbqing at the trail head upon our return from the ride. He'll be providing ribs, chicken, garlic mashed potatos, tossed green salad, and most importantly uncle brewskies for a quick recovery.

I test drove the right arm on a monster pork loin that I grilled last weekend, and it's good to go.

... like the last ride I did there. You have to give a lot of credit to the guy that pulled the BOB in there with the ice-cream maker.

Zignzag, you're coming, right? Anyone have Telemark's email? He'd probably be into it as well.

Zonic, Suzy could make it. I don't know about you. You seem enthusiastic enough. 8^)
Thanks for the page....Zonic Man

Question for everyone who's into enduro riding:Fast Eddy
Sep 6, 2002 8:47 AM
If you were going on this ride, how much food would you bring?

It's about 60 miles and 10k' of climbing. There's gatorade and powerbars at the 20 mile point (4k' by that time). Otherwise there is dirt. I figure it will take me around 12 hours.

My guess:

One giant salami and cheese sandwich, not because it's greasy, or because the one that I got from Cruisy at the end of Toad's was one of the best parts of that ride, but because it won't be too gross even after riding in my pack for 6 hours.

One pbj to eat early. They get pretty gross pretty fast.

A couple bagels and bananas for the early part of the ride.

6-8 powerbars. More?

124 oz water capacity and a filter. I figure I'll drink 2 gallons of water, and a couple quarts of gatorade during the day.

Gu flask. Two?

Gummi bears and trail mix.

That's going to just about fill my Blowfish. Anyone taking bets as to who's going to finish, and who's going to do some forced primitive camping?
Bring some Gatorade or Cytomax Powder with you.Biking Viking

When you're low on electrolytes, water sits like a rock in your stomach and you just can't drink even if you should. Plain water will make you gag.

It sounds like you're bringing enough food, but save some of the real food for the end. You'll quickly lose the taste for Power Bars.

My experience is that when fatigue sets in, it supresses hunger and thirst - and you need to force feed yourself to keep going. This is easier if you save some really tasty and easily digested goodies for the end of the ride.

light, small and works like a champ! I never forget it and it has saved my bonking a$$ many times.
Ahhh, what to eat?Zaphod

First, start with a monster breakfast. I'd opt for a monster omelete of like 5 eggs, skipping half the yolks. Oatmeal works but I think the simple carbs will be a liability. The previous night's meal should also be fairly protein rich and not overly spiced. No need for a "hot pepper ride". Yech.

For enduro races, I opted to be fueled entirely by GU. But that's not the point of this epic fun ride.

You'll want lots of FAT during the ride. Cashews & pbj's are certainly in order. Being vegetarian (+fish), I'd pack in the "Tofurkey Jerky" (yes it's a real product) or salmon/tuna jerky. Your options are wider but get it at TRADER JOE'S because their meat jerky somehow skips the nitrates and are all natural, yippee. Your sandwich stashed at the North entrance/break point should be hearty and appealing. If you're bonking and feel like crap with your stomach churning, you'll want something that goes down easily. Personally, I'd stash a boca burger stacked with cheese (aka fat), mustard and avocado (more fat). Oh right... you'll be wanting SALT at this point. Potato chips, whatever tasty snacks with salt will be your best friend.

During the riding bits & short breaks I'd opt for plenty of GU and whatever Powerbars you like. And time your eating such that you've not just finished your big sandwich before a monster climb.

Don't experiment with new product on ride day. Cyto works great if your body is used to it, otherwise disaster could ensue.

One final bit. Carry Calcium-citrate (Trader Joe's-excellent source) supplements. If you are cramping or think you might, calcium citrate can bring a quaking spazzzing muscle back from the edge. Take it, wait 20 minutes and spin a really low gear for awhile & you'll be fine. Amazing stuff. Avoid supplements that use oyster shells as the calcium source as it isn't readily absorbed.

And don't forget the vitamin i (ibuprofin)

Have fun,

Zaphod

Maybe in 2 years I'll have enough muscle endurance for it...in the mean time, I'll be looking forward to all the pics!
