| What to do? (totally non mtb) | Hugi Sep 6, 2002 3:28 PM | | Here is my dillema,
I have 94' Toyota p/u truck with a shell and carpet kit inside. Its in good shape, 125k miles on it. Its good for camping, except the fact that I have to take off both wheels and shove the bike in the front seat, anyways...
there are tons of sales on cars/trucks going on where I live lately. I have some money (not tons), and have the itch to get something new.
my toyota is totally paid off, has been for 4 years or so, I know it would be crazy to get rid of it....but is 125k miles a lot for a Toyota? Is it on its last days ya think?
i guess I just need someone to talk me out of getting something new, with a whole new car payment. or is my best bet to get something new?
anyone? :) |
| No question | moneyshot Sep 6, 2002 3:35 PM | | keep the truck. I have a similar set-up actually. (1995, shell, 110k miles)
Toyota's are good to go for 200-300k miles if you take care of it, easily. You have a nice setup and its paid for, keep it! (Unless you are one of those people who needs a new car, just for the sake of having a new car) |
| re: What to do? (totally non mtb) | Anonymous Coward Sep 6, 2002 4:27 PM | | What's your monthly repair bill? What would be the monthly payments on the new ride? Keep driving that truck until the monthly repair bill exceeds the new monthly payment. |
| One flaw in your logic. | Biking Viking Sep 6, 2002 6:17 PM | | Repair bills for old vehicles don't come in predictable monthly intervals.

| You are correct. | Anonymous Coward Sep 6, 2002 7:10 PM | | However, by keeping track of your expenses (as you should be doing in general), and estimating future repairs (gee, that's a funny noise how much is it gonna cost me eventually and how long will it likely hold out) you can get a pretty good estimate. And of course my rule of thumb also fails to take into account down payments, length of contract and interest rates. |
| re: What to do? (totally non mtb) | cb Sep 6, 2002 9:45 PM | | My toyota truck has 180000 miles on it and is going strong. I'd keep the truck and get a hitch mount rack for your problem. |
| Car payments suck.. | free-agent Sep 7, 2002 8:16 AM | | keep the truck and put the monthly car payment in an account for your dream mtb. vacation! I'm assuming your insurance will go up for a new truck so save that towards a new bike!! |
| re: What to do? (totally non mtb) | Sheik Yorbhouti Sep 8, 2002 8:36 PM | | Keep it. Toyota trucks are just getting warmed up at 125K miles...IF you do the required maintenance. I've got three Toy trucks, my newest has the most miles, 150K or so. I'd say, save the money and drive this one as long as possible. Is it 4x4? If so, you can probably sell it easy enough if that's the path you decide to take... |
| re: What to do? (totally non mtb) | Deuce Sep 9, 2002 4:44 AM | | Keep the truck. My '89 Toyota 4x4 has 195k and its still going strong. Built in 1994? Yours is still just a little baby. You got to let him grow up before you send him to the old folks home. |
