Its starting... media overhyping 9/11 anniversary...Jonesy
Sep 8, 2002 4:15 AM
I realize these were tragic events, but every news channel I turn on is talking about this non-stop again, showing the planes hitting, etc. Do we really need to re-live this? I know the networks are trying to sell ads, but gosh, it would be nice to just see a 2 hour special or something, instead of non-stop discussion about it.

Time to turn the tube off. I might not even turn it on the whole day of 9/11 because its going to be a marathon of terror...and IMHO, just what the idiots that did this want.
For you, yes.... turn it offDragonfly

Some people need this though. There is no one way to deal with this anniversary for people. Whatever is comfortable for you.

Some people need to re-live it. Maybe out of some sort of respect for the ones that died. Maybe as a way to make sure that they don't ever forget.

My Dad didn't talk much about WWII, but he kept much memorabilia (sp?) and wrote, in detail, about it. He did, soon before he died, write a journal and gave it to me. He said that it should never be forgotten. He lost his only brother in that war.

I think that if people need to re-live it to help heal and it is their way of getting through this horrible time, let them.

Myself, I won't be glued to the tv, but I will maybe watch a special or something like that.

And I'll fly my Dads old flag as I know he would do if he were here.

To the folks out there that were close to the 9/11 tragedy and/or lost friends or relatives...

My heart goes out to you all. Do whatever you NEED on 9/11.

I agree about the need to remember, but my problem is that the TV networks are surely going to feel the need to replay the gory images of the planes crashing into the towers, over and over and over again.

And they will do so with the claim that, "we play that footage because of the 'need to remember'." F' THAT!!! Ive seen that footage way more times than I ever need to. To claim that watching that footage helps with the grieving process is like showing someone footage of a loved one being stabbed to death over and and over, with the claim of, showing it to 'help the grieving processs and its so that the living relatives will never forget'.

While they are at it, why dont they show the people who lept to their deaths from the upper floors of the towers? They could play it over and over and over. Maybe then show it in slow motion. And then maybe show it in reverse, so that it looks like the people are jumping back in to the building. And then maybe they could zoom in on the faces so that their loved ones can identify them and see the looks of terror on their faces. Thats the basic logic the networks will use as an exscuse.

TV sucks!

Im going to choose to not watch whatever ad selling, sadistic, crap is on TV that day.

First Lady Barbara Bush makes a statement on the subject -

I just got a spam email trying to sell me the DVD copy of "America Remembers - The 911 Story".

I understand that everyone grieves in their own way but, come on!!!

Mass marketing drivel like this helps the grieving?

The whole thing is pretty disgusting. I have a relative who works for FEMA in NYC. She loves her job because she helping people who's lives are torn apart by some disaster. However this assignment she has grown to hate because it's become a huge political football where our elected officals are outright lying about what's being done and not being done for their own political gain. I think we need to watch closely the huge power and money grab that is going on here. Everything today to the media and politicians is a "crisis" because they know that enough people are dumb enough to believe them and, as a result, they become even more powerful and influential. Do we really want people who prosper from a crisis be the ones who try to stop them? Personally, I'm going to remember the events of 9/11 by turning off my TV too and encourage others to do the same.
A quick clarification. . .JS5280

I stated originally; "I think we need to watch closely the huge power and money grab that is going on here." A more accurate statement would be; "I think we should RECOGNIZE the huge power and money grab that is going on here." The former statement conflicts with my main point and implies we should subject ourselves more to plane flying into building footage ad nauseam, bleeding heart talking heads, and jingoistic saber-rattlers.

I gotta disagree. I think it scenes and images need to be shown for those of us (myself included) who live in there own world (mountain biking, work, raising kids, going to school, etc.) who may not have been directly effected by the events. I think we need to be reminded every so often in order to keep vigilant.

In Pearl Harbor there were "nearly 3000 killed and injured". I think Sept eleventh equals or surpasses it based upon the fact that it was ON our land (the first attack on our land since the Spanish/American war....Pearl Harbor was in a territory). We should have great reverence for those that died and great disgust for those that committed such violent acts.

I'm going to go to work, then go home to pack because I'm taking a few days off to go see my woman back home and ride in my favorite park. I refuse to let it disrupt my life. The very thing bin laden wanted. While I'll never forget what happened and those who died because of this a$$hole, the best thing we can do is to show him that he's not going to disrupt us.

Then ride. Pretty simple, isn't it? Don't know about the media, but I've seen too much of 9/11. I've lived through it once, I'm not going to do so again.

Would you have the same opinion if YOU lost a family member or loved one? Probably not!!!!!! This was a horrific event that ENDED countless lives and effected thousands across the world. Next time you post your opinion you should first think outside your own little world.

what would you suggest they do, just go about their business? Sorry, Sept. 11 is a day that will never be forgotten, not should it be.

And how can you say that the networks are trying to use this to sell ads. Sorry, the news channels I watched this a.m. were commercial free, meaning they weren't making any money.

I'm taking the day off of riding today to remember what happened a year ago, not riding to forget it.
