| For MikeT and AK Ken, and everyone else too............. | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 6:10 AM | | Who said Japan is flat?
This is looking down at our hotel in Hokkiado |
| It's beautiful! | michigantammy Sep 8, 2002 9:55 AM | | Thanks for the nice photos. Is it from Hokkaido as well? Are there lots of mountain biking trails in the area? I have some friends who live in Sapporo, do lots of downhill skiing (so I'm sure it's not flat), but didn't hear them mention about mtb in Sapporo. However, it doesn't mean there isn't any. I'm sure there are some around. I'll have to ask them sometime.
BTW, we missed the chance to see one of the 2002 FIFA World Cup games in Sapporo. I think you guys have done a great job of hosting. Here's some of the goal photos....

| Flat? A chain of volcanic islands? | DeRanger Sep 8, 2002 7:47 AM | | Not likely.
Have you ever read anything by Gary Snider? Much of his writing talks about the mountains of Japan, particularly the relationship of the terrain to the teachings of the Zen masters.

| More water..... | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 5:02 PM | | I tried to load some more pics lastnight but I think the server blew a few tubes, so I'll try again.
All the photos were taken on our trip (Junko and I) to Hokkiado just a week ago. Nice place.

| Nothing like a view from atop an active volcano.......... | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 5:09 PM | | The view from here on Mt.Usu was fantastic. You could see for at leats 100miles and could see the southern arch of the Hokkiado Island, as well as 6 more volcanos.
This pic is looking into the "Great crater of Mt.Usu". It erupted from here in 1975, but the latest eruption was 2 years ago from 7 vents on the opposite side.

| Peak opposite of the cables..... | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 5:13 PM | | I think the highth was around 1950 meters high. It was cool and windy up there (we only walked aroung at the cable car station for a bit @1100 meters)

| The Sign..... | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 5:20 PM | | It says it all...... |
| And even more water..... | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 5:24 PM | | Cold, clear water. |
| And my lovely Junko, with a view | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 5:28 PM | | |
| And myself | Mr. Tokyo Sep 8, 2002 5:32 PM | | This is Mt.Showa Shinzan, next to Mt.Usu. It is a lava dome formed in the 1943-45 "eruption" when this thing appeared overnight (more like a few years).
It is a weird pink-ish color and is still steaming.
I must admit this was kinda my "Volcanic Tour", but we got so see a very beautiful part of Japan.
