Splain me somethin ...(12 posts)

Splain me somethin ...NewMex
Oct 7, 2002 9:10 AM
Woke up in the middle of the night Saturday night and felt a pain in my knee as I tried to curl up. Got up Sunday morning and my knee was very swollen. Now the reason this is interesting is that I didn't do anything Saturday except drive the kids around town. I didn't notice anything all day Saturday and even Saturday night when I went to bed everything was fine. I didn't do anything Friday or Thursday out of the normal which is commute back and forth to work.

All day Sunday I sit with an ice pack on the knee (30 on 30 off) crunching ibuprofen all day. No affect except a cold knee. Today feels the same. I didn't do anything, really, so what the hell is going on? What would make this happen? I'm somewhat aware of knee issues, having had an ACL repair in '81, but this is baffling. I can't ride my bike because of the swelling and besides it's just damn annoying.

Ideas on cause or cure?

You probably strained it while you were sleeping.

a bit late from my "therapy" session at the local brew pub on Friday night but I thought we did all nice and made up. Could be that someone told her some lies about me. I've got to stop acting like that in front of people that know my wife.

I have a similar problem with an ankle but no swelling. It just likes to reoccur when it wants to. I'm pretty rough (and clumsy) and I tend to injure myself without knowing it and not realize it till much later. Sometimes I step on a step wrong or just by getting in/out of the car twist it slightly enought to trigger it.

I'd say with swelling then there is something serious wrong there. Better see a doctor!

happens enough to trigger this type of reaction I can recognize the causal event. What is so baffling is that I didn't do anything Saturday that would even remotely cause this as best as I can remember. We went to a party Saturday night and did the usual sitting around drinking beer but no crazy stuff. Maybe that's what it was. The body is trying to tell me to stop drinking beer. Well it had better just shut up and deal with it cuz that ain't happening.

My Dr. and I are on a first name basis these days.
Could it be TMB syndrome?DeRanger

TMB = "too many birthdays"...

Once I passed thirty-five I noticed I tended to injure myself participating in such strenuous activities as fixing a meal, walking to my truck, and showering.

In all seriousness, you may have strained something and had slow leakage of fluid into the area of the joint. If RICE isn't making it better, it's worth talking to your ortho, even just to rule out anything more serious.

I just had a birthday (45) last Tuesday and it is finally catching up to me. I knew that things got slower as one got older but this is ridiculous. I did take a shower on Saturday as well so that has got to be it.

If it's not better tomorrow (3 day RICE) I'll be calling the Dr.
Possible cause: UPI?Mary Ann

Or, an unidentified party injury from your Friday night out? ;-) A twist of the knee that you may not remember or think was too serious at the time?

Or maybe it was just the way you curled your knee in bed on Saturday. Tis strange indeed. Whatever the cause, I hope you find a quick cure.

from twisting it should be my neck.

I like that, UPI. That would explain a lot of things.

Are you, uhhhh, active while you sleep? Do you twist&turn and wind up in weird contortions? Sleepwalk? Pushups or situps? Tae-bo? Get the roadbike up on the rollers?

every football season. Every Sunday, I get this really bad pain. It seems to go away in late January.

Just kidding. Do you run any? I play ultimate frisbee, and the season just started. After my second game, my knees were sore as hell. Had nothing to do with biking, and everything to do with running.
