A bit of climbing-a LOT of downhilling! Another CS adventureKitchenware

DaveM and I are becoming quite the 'Springers here lately. On Saturday we cruised down to Colorado Springs, once again, to meet up with Kristian and Jason at the VanBriggle pottery museum. No, we werent there to see pottery, we were there for an EPIC DH! We're talking enough climbing to appease any XC dork ;) and enough downhilling to make any dher wanna, well.... you know. All said, by the end of the day, I spent all reserve energy, ate everything I had, crossed many bridges, saw more military aircraft than ever before, nearly killed the Bullit, nearly killed myself, did a bitchin' nose manual (briefly, and on accident), had fun and didn't thank Kristian nearly enough for that amazing ride.

Anyway, on with the pics and CARNAGE!

First up is Jason, just into the ride and sporting blood.

Sorry for the poor zoom quality, I was too lazy to get off my bike.

Gotta trade you a CS tour for a downieville tour....

That was the first time I've linked all of those trails together. With the exception of the mile of 4x4 road climb at the top (which we could have driven), we went less than 100 yards that wasn't singletrack in the whole ride.

It will be a while before I'm in California, but your welcome to a tour any time!

Make me ride on a trail where a mistake to the right could cost you life and/or limb. (see drop off to the water in kristians pics to come)

It's hard to tell here, but there is a 40 foot cliff on the right that leads to a solid rock stream bed.

I'm doing pretty well. How's your arm healing? Are you riding much? I've been doing a lot of lift serviced riding this summer so I feel pretty decent on the downhills--haven't done nearly enough climbing though...

Any plans for a Colorado trip next year?

Man, that was FUN! I'm ready for another run. What a fantastic weekend! I think that I'd rather go down to the Springs, than to some of them fancy outa-state ride spots!

It was nice to meet you Jason! You set a new record for me, I don't think that I've ever been dropped on a climb so quick! Give a shout to me or KW if you're up this way.

Thanks for the shuttle Jim, I don't think that I would have made it home without 'cha! Da' Bull-eet, she's indestructable!

You'll have to come down for a tour of the Park sometime once the snow starts flying up there!

Looks like everyone but me got out to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather this weekend. Well, at least I got to brew a beer yesterday, so I could drink and dream of the next adventure.

I feel like I'm falling off the technical learning curve, becoming a "roadie on dirt" who likes to climb and enjoys smooth singletracks down. Must come with marriage, initially anyways, maybe I'll outgrow it...

And the offending piece of earth...

Do you have a side picture of that? (and the story behind it)kristian
Oct 7, 2002 11:28 AM
That is probably the deepest/worst ding I've ever seen in a mountain bike--the picture doesn't do it justice!

Jim was planning on dropping a rock slab that was a little longer than a bike lenth long. You had to lift up about about 6" to get onto the slab. The plan was to try it first and then to take pictures on the second take. He rolled up to the rock, got up on the rock with his front wheel, nose-wheelied the entire lenth of the slab and then proceeded to bounce down the trail until coming to a full stop. Up until the crash, he looked just like Wade Simmons doing a nose-wheelie. I'm not sure what was louder--our collective *gasp* or the noise the swingarm made connecting to the rock!

lol, now it looks bad!

I took it out for some testing yesterday. I took a few 3.5'-4' drops to flat off the post office loading dock and it looks ok.

I think it'll be cool to ride for a while, but I shouldn't count on it lasting forever like that. No biggy... It might not do me any good to get it repaced, I was looking at 5th's for a Christmas present, so a new frame would be more cost effective.

Jim
$250....CraigH
Oct 7, 2002 12:02 PM
and you'll have room for an 8" rotor, a stronger chain stay cross brace and the new shifter cable routing along the chain stay instead of down the seat stay.
What's the cost of a 5th...Kitchenware
Oct 7, 2002 12:11 PM
or Avy? If I was going to upgrade the shock wouldn't it be smarter to just buy a new Bullit frame?

$300 for the 5th. Don't know about the Avalanche....CraigH
Oct 7, 2002 12:23 PM
With the big dent in your swingarm, it might be hard to sell your current frame now.
I'd replace it if I sold it.Kitchenware

$250 swingarm (crash replacement)

$200 front triangle (crash replacement)

$300 5th Element (new)

____

$750 new frame, shock with spare Fox
avalanche: $450 w/o remote compression adjustmentnarlus

another $100 with.

based on what i've heard, seen, and experienced, the avalanche is definitely worth the extra coin.

..for a great ride. Look forward to riding with Jim and Dave again in the near future. When we up for Boulder County ride? I got my butt down to Full Cycle and picked up some of the 661 shin/knee guards this morn and I broke out the good'ol salsa quick-release seatpost collar. No boxxer in my future but will make a few adjustments for the next ride and see if I have a bit more control on the steeps. See you soon...

I'm glad you were able to come! I'm hoping to get up there sometime before the snow really starts flying (maybe the weekend after next?).
