A friend is looking for his first mtb. I took him to test ride the Dakar and a bunch of other bikes, hardtails, duallies etc. He liked the Dakars ride and price the best. 599.00 is cheap, any comments?

For budget bikes, Jamis is where it's at. Their prices are very competitive, nicely speced, and their quality is up to par with the bigger brands. If he can't afford an Indy Fab, the Jamis is a very good choice.

Buy a slightly used MTB from the MTBR classifieds. You can get more bike for your dollar...esp. if he has about $800 to spend. A nice quality hard tail is a good start...XTR or XT, a good suspension fork, ect.

IMO, hardtails help MTB'ers develop 'sharper' skills when it comes to picking lines and basic bike handling skills...others may disagree.

When it gets right down to it, just get him out on the trails. Don't overload the guy with technical trails and epic rides...I'm sure he's in good hands though.

Just my $.02

Tell your friend to go for it. The Dakar is a good value and a good entry level bike. The 2002 at least has a sealed bearing in the main pivot. The pre 2002 frames had bushings at all pivot points and were high maintenance if you rode them much. Don't let people fool you into thinking Jamis is a bunch of nice guys that love bikes and ride on their lunch breaks though. They want to sell bikes, PERIOD! The Dakar is a good entry level bike though and you usually do get what you pay for.
