I'm planning to make the Teluride to Moab trip next summer and am looking for someone who has done it that could give me some feedback. I woul like to know what you thought and any advice you could give to make the trip easier.
I hope you enjoyJ.D.

doubletrack. I see the tour group tracks frequently on doubletracks on the Uncompahgre.

Ended on 9/11. But that is another story. Suffice it to say it was weird to come down from the mountains and find out about all that had gone on.

As for the trip, it was fun. As said above, all fireroad. Still an adventure. Cabins were basic at best. Sleeping bags were an adventure given that they were used by all the people before you. Recommend bringing your own liner. Or, maybe carrying your own sleeping bag.

Ride was actually quite fun. We managed to finish each day by about 1 (though we started pretty early each day). Tried to not race, though that was sometimes difficult. First day was sobering because it was one of the more difficult (John Brown was the other more difficult). Otherwise, it was a pretty simple coast.

Some in my group pulled BOBS. Probably will do that if we do it again. Broke my panniers rack which was a drag. Both ways had a major influence on the stability of the bike which was a drag. Especially when the riding actually got fun.

As for clothing, be prepared for everything. It was cold and hot. Bring enough to last you over a few days. Also, bring camp clothes.

Don't let the town people in Gateway scare you in to driving you up John Browns. It is do-able, just hard. They all were trying to scare us and then charge an outrageous rate to take us up. Eventually found someone who took one of our group for about $25 I think. Some asked for $60.

Enjoy, I would like to do it again.

Gateway is the Deep South of Mesa County. John Brown Canyon is lightweight compared to riding UP Uranium Road.
yup. John Brown isn't all that bad...martini

I did a tour through there in '94 or so. It's a fun ride, completely non-technical, but still enjoyable for the great scenery. Uranium road is a blast to some down, but like JD said, just be gald you don't ride UP it. Don't fear John Brown, just put your groove on and truck on up it.

What are BOBS? Did you have to use front and rear panniers?

BOBS are trailors that you pull behind the bike. One wheel, made by Yakama I think. Carries massive amounts of stuff.

There is a great write-up in the October issue of National Geographics Adventure magazine. Sounds like a great trip with a good bit of singletrack on the side from the main ride. Also provides contact info for reservations, shuttles, and other accomodations. Make sure you post a write up after the trip.
