Swiss MTB, even better than the chocolate and pocket knives! (5 posts)
| Swiss MTB, even better than the chocolate and pocket knives! | Deuce Oct 8, 2002 5:30 AM | | In case no one knows, and most people outside of Germany don't. OCT. 3rd was the day of German Unity, and with it came a 4 day weekend. So I took the HT on a little trip to Zürich, Switzerland. The weather didnt want to cooperate, but I got about 7 hours of riding in anyway. Mostly on Ütliberg, a 500m mountain that rises above Lake Zürich which is already a 1/2 km above sea level. The singletrack was real rooty and wet which made for some exciting moments as the trail is just notched into the mountain and with a 20 to 30 m drop on one side for most of the trail. I took a ton of pictures but havent developed them yet. But there were some great views of Lake Zürich and the surrounding countryside. They say on a clear day you can see the Alps from the top of Ütliberg but it was overcast the whole weekend and raining heavily on Fri. Would have been absolutely amazing if not for the mud. At the bottom of one hill, it took me 20 minutes to scrape the mud from my brakes and chainrings, just so everything would spin freely. I was definitely feelin the passion this weekend, which was great (been feelin a little burnt out lately)
Love seein everybodies ride pics, keep 'em comin. Hopefully Ill get mine posted in a few days. |

One of the things I loved about my one-and-only visit to the Alps (Austrian, not Swiss) is how OLD all of the trails and paths are. Some of these have been travel routes for herders and foresters for centuries - what a wonderful sense of history and culture to go with the amazing scenery.

| Look familiar? | Ripzalot Oct 8, 2002 8:39 AM | | Hey, Deuce, I'm down in Lausanne. If you ever want to ride around here let's hook up. BTW, I lived in Zurich for 3 years. Uetliburg is nice proximity to the city. Lots of fun singletrack there. Yeah, on a clear day you can see forever, but there are not so many clear days there! |

Im not exactly sure where Lausanne is (Southern Switzerland?), but right now I live near Düsseldorf, Deutschland, so it might be kinda tough to get together for a ride.
Peace,

| Genau | Ripzalot Oct 8, 2002 11:50 PM | | Yeah, Lausanne is another 2.5 hours from Zurich down the autobahn (or by train) on Lake Geneva. Keep it in mind if you ever want to explore. How is Deutschland? I've actually only been twice - Oktoberfest in Munich and Neuschwanstein (the Black Forest would be a great place for an epic XC ride).
I've posted some pics earlier for biking down in these parts, check 'em out.
