| I'm gonna regret this but... my first helmet cam vid here: | mergs Oct 8, 2002 9:11 AM | | I really think that this vid is pretty lame especially since these are very good, technical, rocky north New Jersey trails, (that you all would love, btw) and the vid simply does no justice to the trails (the climbs are too slow, and some of the rock gardens simply must be finessed) but... here goes, my very first helmetcam vid here:
http://www.qsius.com/mergs/vids/cannonball-25-sep-2002.zip
The ride: This video is mostly on the Cannonball Trail and Indian Trail of the Ramapo Mtn State Park, a.k.a. Skyline Drive. Ride starts out at dusk then goes to nite. fun! :) Music is from some mtb vids I have so you may recognize the tunes if you have the same vids I have.
The equip: I am using a helmetcamera with a Sony TRV-25 DV cam.
Warning: its big (48MB zipped), and 13+ mins long, so cable modem connection or better will help, big time. Also the quality is on the low end due to the huge size that a medium or high quality vid will be. I need to go back to www.PeteFagerlin.com and see how he's doing it (big props to Pete for a great website, btw).
As I get better, I'll post more. Snowboard season is coming up, so I will get a lot of practice with the cam this winter. :)
Enjoy, Mergs |
| To get ideas on compression settings... | Doug Oct 8, 2002 9:29 AM | | Find a video you like in terms of quality. Then look at what settings they used. Being a Mac guy I'm naturally going to reccomend using Quicktime. It not only has MPEG4 (very few MEPG4 players other than QT though) but the Sorrenson 3 codec which is very highly regarded. If I remember correctly many (most?) of the trailers you can download at Apple are MPEG4. (I'm on my retarted NT Dell w/o QT at work so I can't check them). For $30 you can get Quicktime 6 PRO and output to all kinds of formats at any setting you care to use. Not to mention it plays any format (but MPEG2 will cost you another $20...).
One of best ways to save space it to reduce your frame rate. DV is 29.97fps, but online videos look good at much fewer fps. |
| thanks for the good tip: reduce the frame rate (nm) | mergs Oct 9, 2002 7:08 AM | | |
| Tryt another host | yankeeheel Oct 8, 2002 9:34 AM | | Even with a super fast connection I'm clocking 5-12k/sec.
Maybe Imagestation? |
| Ditto that... | Doug Oct 8, 2002 9:54 AM | | I'm getting under 12kps and I usually get 80+. |
| me too.... | bungyfish Oct 8, 2002 9:59 AM | | I usually get over 100 (work connection) and I am only pulling 8-10. Cancelled out when it popped up at 2 hrs remaining. Would like to see the vid though. Good Luck.. |
| clocking 61kb/sec | tlg Oct 9, 2002 3:40 AM | | It's Wednesday morning time though. |
| thanks for letting me know (nm) | mergs Oct 9, 2002 7:07 AM | | |
| trails look like fun, lots of rocks! | red-haze Oct 9, 2002 2:46 AM | | I bet you had fun putting all that together, and probably took along time too. thats what I've found, putting together a little video takes a long time.
here's some ideas to help mebbe:
climbing video is boring, even when its exciting its boring (have put it in my own videos, everyone falls asleep...)
shorter sections of video helps to keep us ADD mtb'rs focused
d/l the free Tmpgenc encoder, links on my site
http://red-haze.com
and a file that I use as a base for my own compression settings
um...fade the music in and out too? I'm not familiar with the tunes you picked and suddenly one stops and another one starts. and usually only use one tune for the whole vid.
Is the sony dv cam mounted to your helmet itself? or are you using a tubecam and feeding that to the dv cam? either way, as you already know, its slipped sideways and so ya got some sideways video. may need a counterweight (pete uses something heavy on the other side of his helmet)hmmm...I think you've got the dv cam mounted on the helmet as its using its internal image stabilization which gives a nice flowing image, not jittery like mine (using tubecam on helmet).
I'd love to see more east coast riding!
bob
was able to d/l the vid a 55.1kbps late at night via T-1 connection. work is soooo coool. |
| thanks for the tips, red-haze... | mergs Oct 9, 2002 7:06 AM | | for the future:
i will sh$tcan climbing parts in the future, you are right... a real sleeper
i share that ADD affliction, so i'll cut the scene lengths down a bit. i think you're right.
i'll tinker with the fades on music and the scenes... i think i know how to do it now with the s/w i'm using (pinnacle studio, which is not stellar, but ok. much better than the useless crap that came with the sony cam)
i'm using a helemetcam (www.helmetcamera.com) and i either have a kink i my neck ;) , or i had the lipstick cam cockeyed.
the software you suggested i will try.... anything to compress this stuff! i am going to check out your vids, you seem to have quite a nice slection.
i showed the vid at a party the other night and most people liked it but i think that they were just being nice to me... i noticed a few people saunter off and grab beers and not return ;)
thanks for the tips... much appreciated!
