A friend of mine will be visiting from MN in a few weeks. If we get good weather, we want to take him for a hike. We were thinking of one of the MROSD open spaces, but the only one that I am familiar with is Skeggs. What I'm looking for is a moderately easy hike, with nice views. I've seen photos from a pretty meadow that looks out over the ocean - I think maybe Russian Ridge, but I'm not sure. Do you have any suggestions for hikes in that area?
Russian Ridge is nice, but I like Windy Hill better for hiking.Biking Viking

No pestering mountain bikers.

Go up the Spring Ridge Fire Road and hike down either Hamms Gulch or Razorback Ridge singletrack. There are nice views at the top. Don't know what "moderately easy" is, but my 7-year old did the hike up Hamms Gulch/down Razorback Ridge in about 3:15. That's a 100% singletrack loop, but you skip the nice views.

I don't know what "moderately easy" is either. The visitor will be my friend's uncle, out here on a business trip. I don't know him very well. I've met him before, and I know that he likes hiking - but he does not look to be in good shape (rather overweight) - so I'm thinking hikes like big basin to the sea are out. Better to stick with easy hikes and have a fun day.

I've heard this too and seen tire tracks there sometimes...but how is poaching this trail any different or more "crazy" than poaching other trails in the area? Not trying to start a fight, just curious...
it's not. (nm)Uncle Brian

Weazel from not telling

Trail Ridden: Please Select

Recommended Route:

UP ALPINE ROAD, NORTH ON SKYLINE BLVD, DOWN THE ILLEGAL SINGLE TRACKS.

Other recommended trails in the same area:

Corte Madera, ELEVATOR SHAFT, aka PIPELINE, it's freaking scrap your nads on your rear tire steep.

Review:

The fireroad is not much fun unless you a phat DH Rig and like going 50+ mph. But there's 2 single tracks decents. ILLEGAL. Hams Gulch is the funnest, but your more likely to run into irrate hikers or a ranger there. The 2nd is Razorback Ridge, this trail get's very little traffic. I've ridden both trails 100s of times and never been busted, HAVE FUN !! Watch out for screaming old ladies on horseback.

has some good trails, views, and a waterfall. It's on Skyline about 2 miles down (SE) from highway 9.

Rancho is nicely located at Hwy 280 and 85 and has a lot of hiking trails. It's a great place to go running. There's nothing too strenuous, but it isn't flat by any means. Sorry, no ocean views. Don't know how old your friend is, but there's a petting zoo at the farm. It doesn't allow bikes, but horses are okay.

I like to start at the "horse" parking lot, which is the first lot on the way in, at the bottom of the hill. Head up the hill, take Coyote over to the farm. Coyote is a nice trail. From the farm, go back out on the main road and back to your car, which is about 3 miles. Or for more action, turn left at the farm and take the main road up to Wildcat. Wildcat winds and switchbacks up and over the hill (loooong switchbacks!), take in the view at the Vista Point, continue down Wildcat on the other side. Eventually you come out back at the farm, where you can take the main road back to your car.

I took my mom (spry 60 year old) to Wunderlich park this summer - lots of Redwoods, and very quiet (unlike the bustling Rancho San Antonio park.) Some climbing, but not strenuous. Saw several deer. Trails are meant for horses, so they are wide and flat.

Good luck!
