| Winter weight loss challenge anyone? | michigantammy Nov 8, 2002 2:30 PM | | http://www.mtbr.com/passion/messages/287519.html
I just looked through the Passion Archives "Weight loss challenge", and wondered if anyone here would like to continue that... and have the challenge for the winter, since winter is coming around the corner, and most of us can't ride (outdoor) as much as we wanted for various reasons. So I guess it would be a "real" challenge to keep ourselves "in shape".
My goal: to lose 5-9 lbs this winter. Currently I'm 119 lbls, 5'3".
BTW, I do need some advice for winter training besides going to the gym daily for running and stair climbing. Any suggestions appreciated.

| Hmmm- | Doc Nov 8, 2002 3:08 PM | | A very good idea. I'm not sure I'd hold up to the challange, but I would be better off if I did.
I'm in.
Indoor exercise in the winter? I've got a bike trainer (not the crazy german shouting explatives at you while you ride, but rather the kind cyclops makes) that I absolutely HATE! I don't know what it is about riding a trainer that I don't like, mabye it's the fact I don't go anywhere, or there's no wind to cool you off, or those three times I fell over while still clipped to the bike that was clamped to the trainer.....
Anyway, I should make better use of that thing. |
| Secret bike trainer tricks | scott.com Nov 9, 2002 12:02 PM | | - Nice bottle of cold water
- A big fan
- TV or music
- Structured workout
Makes it so much easier to handle.
I don't even try to loss weight over the winter. I try to keep the weight gain to about 5 to 7 lbs. It usually all comes off in the spring. |

| I've been in a weight lose challenge for 1.5 years | Bonee Nov 8, 2002 3:17 PM | | Haven't lost a single pound. I should really lose about 15-20 pounds. I'm 5'8", 185 pounds right now. I should really be around 165-170 tops. Someone at work knows of my weight sensitivity and to mess with me the other day he said, "Wow, are those man boobs".
That is my new motivation. I'm starting Monday, but I've agreed with myself to slack Thanksgiving weekend.
If I can be 170 at New Years I'll be happy. Living in Southern CA I really have no excuse. |
| Ditto... | Timmy Nov 8, 2002 5:02 PM | | lost a significant amount commuting this summer, but as soon as the early morning and evening lights began to fade and the commute became dangerous it started coming back.
Bought a membership to a health club to compensate (spinning classes)and have yet to walk in the door. Talk about pathetic.
Of course it is raining today and that's an excuse.
TCN (looking forward to more early mornings, night rides and weekends) |
| Don't you live in San Diego? | Bonee Nov 8, 2002 5:36 PM | | Not sure of your route but if I recall you live out at the east end of Penesquitos and work west near UCSD and use Penesquitos for part of your commute?
You should get some lights. I still commute two days a week from Carlsbad/La Costa to Sorrento Valley, 20 miles each way. It is really a neat change of pace from the summer commute. You just have to be sure to get at least one really decent tail light so the drivers can see you from behind. I actually have two on my commuter bike, both various versions of the Specialized Afterburner.
Oh, and be sure to watch the weather report every night. If there is even a hint of rain in the forest I will pass on riding this time of year. Darkness AND rain is a sure recipe for disaster on San Diego roads. |
| Got lights... | Timmy Nov 8, 2002 6:06 PM | | but after separate near death experiences with as skunk and an alien of the illegal variety in penesquitos, not to mention the drivers who have trouble in daylight much less at night I decided to shelve the commute until after the equinox for my own safety.
NOt all bad. I shipped my hubs from the cross bike off for a rebuild today. Perhap once those arrive I might find some added enthusiam. Until then weekend rides are going to have to do. Was planning on the Cuyamaca thang this weekend but had to work. Good thing since it was canceled anyway.
Have a good weekend.

| Illegal Alien - do tell... | Bonee Nov 8, 2002 6:11 PM | | I see a lot of things from nature out in Penesquitos (startled a heard of deer last week and thought I was going to get stampeeded), but I've yet to see any illegal alien activities out there.
What happened? What part of the canyon?
That is one of the reasons I don't like to ride Rose Canyon at night. During the day there is odd activity out there, I can' imagine it at night, although I know at least one rider who does night rides there.
You have a good weekend too. |
| Rose is scary at night .... | Timmy Nov 8, 2002 6:30 PM | | There are whole freakin' villages back there. But that's another story.
The Alien.... Nothing major, just spooked me a bit. Early October~6:00 AM two miles into the canyon from the west end. Pretty much completely dark and I came across a
"body" lying spread eagle in the middle of the trail with an old bicycle by his side. Rode past him and he didn't move, got about a 100 feet away and thought. "Sh*t! What if this guy needs help." Stupidly turned around to check on him. After a couple shouts he wakes up babbling incoherently in spanish, got up and walked off into the bush with his bike.
Like I said nothing major. Near death was a complete exaggeration (well the skunk was near death). It just made me realize how vulnerable you are when you're back there by yourself. |
| lol | Bonee Nov 8, 2002 6:54 PM | | If you've ever ridden up the power lines you are familiar with the somwhat long fire road climb. Last year on maybe my 3rd ever night ride I see some bike reflectors up ahead, attached to an old 10-speed of the department store variety. It is laying on the side of the trail next to what looks like a body bag. My heart starting racing and I speed up to get past it. I didn't want to know what was inside the bag or where the person riding the bike was. Went by a few days later and both the bike and the bag were gone.
I hear ya on the vulnerable part. I liek to go Wednesday nights because there are a lot of groups that go out that night. It adds a little bit of comfort to see other lights and know you aren't out there alone.
Funny what darkness does. |
| re: Winter weight loss challenge anyone? | PROGRE-SS Nov 8, 2002 3:43 PM | | Ever since graduating from high school, I've been weight loss challenged!! Being 5"6" and around 185# sucks! I have a hard enough time trying to lose weight during the warmer months, how am I going to do it during the winter stuck inside? I hate running, have no time to get to a gym, let alone ride my bike in recent times. And I love food too much. Damn Food Network!! I gotta make more time available to ride my bike! Anyways, I'm up for a challenge!

| I'm in, and an inspirational note | professor frink Nov 8, 2002 4:18 PM | | Last winter, right before Thanksgiving, I was at 195 lbs. At 5'8 1/2", that's pretty stout. So, I'm looking at how close I was getting to 200 lbs, and the holidays were coming, and I said "F this, I'm NOT going up to 200 lbs." So, some changes in diet ( I LOVE food, and beer, and drinks, and dessert), a little consistency in the exercise, and I started dropping some lbs. Just one or two a month, but in winter, I was stoked! Summer comes, and I start really riding, and doing some other stuff, but nothing too painful, just having fun. I got down to 170! So, I put some of it back on, almost 10 pounds, and I'm saying "F that, I'm not putting that weight back on" so I'm in. I figure if I can show up next spring at 170 lbs, the summer will burn off another 5 or 10, then I'll be skinny! Officially, my goal is to get to 170 lbs. |
| Gee - a trip down memory lane | M-U-M Nov 8, 2002 4:24 PM | | No weight challenge recruit here. Was neat to see some of the "old pharts" posts again. Good luck on your weight-fest! |
| Hey M-U-M, Would you change your mind for a beer? :) | michigantammy Nov 8, 2002 7:35 PM | | Just kidding. BTW, sorry I didn't mean to stir up the memory....
Thanks, I hope we can get a big crowd going here :).

| Why? | Doc Nov 8, 2002 5:48 PM | | Makes climbing that much easier-
I never was a weight freak (on bike matters) why obsess over 10 grams when I'm carrying an extra 15 lbs?
Besides, I don't think spandex is my friend right now. |
| anorexia... | Gnarly1 Nov 11, 2002 8:46 AM | | ...doesn't make it any easier to climb....that girl's gotta be a toothpick already at 119 lbs, most of which is probably muscle, since she mountain bikes! |

| re: Winter weight loss challenge anyone? | ahasbeen Nov 8, 2002 7:12 PM | | I am in.I weight 223 lbs at 6 ft tall.I would like to get under 200.Maybe 185 to 190.I used to lift weights alot and have very wide shoulders and big lats so if I could get down to that it would be ok.I have been going to get started on my diet so to get my craving for pizza out of the way I just returned from an all you can eat pizza buffet. So I am ready.Lets get started. |
| Thanks all participants! Let 's say by Valentines' Day? Or | michigantammy Nov 8, 2002 7:21 PM | | by the New Year? If anyone can come close to their goal, then he/she can get a beer (seemed like it's a favorite drink for many) from me :). I guess, now I have to figure out how to deliver and how many ....just hope I don't go broke lol!
I was a little worried about posting this topic. I know it might be a sensitive subject for some, but I thought it would be a good challenge for many of us to do during the "best season" for eating :). And I'm glad to see a few wanted to be challenged.
Well, great. Good luck to all and have a great weekend. I'll be riding at the Fort Custer again this weekend. I hope I still can get to see some fall colors, if there's any leaves left on the trees.
BTW, thanks to all for suggestions.

| I'm in too.. some suggestions | Ganze Nov 11, 2002 9:53 AM | | I've lost 40 lbs since xmas and have at least 20more to go.
I wasn't a part of any previous winter challenges so forgive me. It would probably help to post our goals and our progress on a given day each week, added to our current lurking and wasting time with Passion while at work anyway.
