| To race or not to race? | amex420 Nov 8, 2002 3:28 PM | | I was looking forward to doing a race on Sunday. My frame was cracked about 3 weeks ago and I have been having problems with the warranty. I have been riding my single speed during the downtime from my fs bike. I was trying to decide if I should just race the ss against the gearies since there is no ss category. Any thoughts? Anyone have any similar situations? |
| According to many SS'ers on this board, they are... | Biking Viking Nov 8, 2002 3:38 PM | | ...faster on their singlespeeds than on their geared bikes.
BV |
| And almost certainly faster... | Paul B Nov 10, 2002 11:20 AM | | ...than on a geared FS bike (unless it's a very light, very efficient FS bike and you know how to work your gears). And, of course, it depends on the terrain.

| And ALMOST certainly faster... | amex420 Nov 10, 2002 1:55 PM | | I ended up racing with the SS. I would of done ok, but there was a 1/2 mile parade lap on flat ground before the singletrack. I was holding between 18-20 MPH with the 32 16 gearing, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the gearies. I entered the singletrack 3rd to last and got caught behind quite a few slower riders. I passed a few riders here and there, but I was never really able to catch up from the bad start. I still finished around the bottom half of the mid-pack and had a blast. Glad I did it, but I would rather have gears in a shorter 14 mile race.

| did it all year... | bones Nov 8, 2002 4:24 PM | | I raced my singlespeed all year long. There wasn't a singlespeed class or another singlespeeder in any of the races. I had a blast doing it. It's the only chance you'll have to both win and lose your category.
You'll definitely have the largest cheering section in the race, people love the underdog.
b. - way faster than BV

| Heck, if you are already entered | Bonee Nov 8, 2002 4:31 PM | | and that is your only option, go for it and be sure to tell us how you did. That would be cool to win your CAT on a SS. |
