| Quite a review for a Tandem MTB | Bonee Nov 8, 2002 4:52 PM | | http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/2002_Tandem/product_85004.shtml
Its funny what you'll find when you poke around this site. And yes, to get wifey to ride more and have more fun so she doesn't have to keep up, we're considering a tandem. Its better than her sleeping until 11:00 am on Sat and Sun mornings. I figure its a tandem or kids. |
| No matter the direction your relationship is heading.... | sparrow Nov 8, 2002 9:29 PM | | .....a tandem will get it there more quickly!!! Just keep that in mind. My stoker and I have been tandeming off road for 10 years now. Multiple tours, group rides, races, 40/50/60 milers. Fruita, Moab, Crested Butte, Sun Valley, Black Hills, Sedona, Medora, Phoenix area, Tucson, Flagstaff, etc, all good, all tandem-able. You'll be shocked at what you can ride if you just give it a try.
A good off road tandem costs about the same as a normal single child delivery, so load up now on a good tandem. We just got a new tandem at the end of this summer, 2003 Ventana El Conquistador with Race Face cranks, Marzocchi 20mm DJ1, Gustav DH discs, Hugi Freeride hubs.....on and on the $$$$ was bled from the bank. This was to retire the 1992 Specialized tandem that was my wife's engagement ring (her choice)!
Man, if you've got the tandem bug, give me a shout off MTBR sometime, I'll give you an earfull......

| Thats what we've heard, and hers is where we are... | Bonee Nov 8, 2002 10:04 PM | | We got a taste of the tandem experience in Vancouver a few months back. My wife is athletic looking and gets in shape rather quickly, but isn't all that technical. MTBing is pretty much out of the question on all but the tamest of trails. I've encouraged her to go alone or with me and I'll just go slow or wait for her, but she feels like she is holding me up. Her riding ended last year when she "accidently" ran over her bike in our garage. (no kidding!)
So we rented a Burley tandem and cruised around the bike paths of Vancouver and had a blast. Pretty mcuh all pavement and flat, but it was still fun and all. It was just fun to ride and get in some excercise and see the sites from a bike without having to worry where she was or how she was doing, and obviously she wasn't holding me back cause I was right there.
We'd have a way to work up to dirt, and I'm not sure what model Burley it was but it was beat on pretty bad. Not sure if it was the beating or if it was the frame, but it felt very squirrely and shakey. Not sure I'd take it on trails, but again it was a rental.
But I also know Burleys are a somewhat decent entry level tandem. Being unsure if the wifey will really get into it, I don't want to blow $3000 if we only take it out once a month. MY goal would be once a week. So I've been looking at the Burley Rock and Roll as a starting point. They seem to get decent reviews, but like I said that other Burley we rented seemed like rubber underneath us. |
| i think that was the rental | dr hoo Nov 9, 2002 6:01 AM | | we tested a rock and roll softride a few years ago, and it rode fine. The beam for the stoker seems like the perfect application for the softride technology (if you are considering the softride option, which i would if i were you).
You should definitely test a quality tandem. It sounds like you are one of the couples that might actually survive owning one. We'd have one, but things keep getting in the way (like moving across country, buying a house, saving for the new roof, etc) |
| Things getting in the way? | Bonee Nov 9, 2002 9:57 AM | | I hear ya. Things for us currently include about $15,000 worth of home improvements these past 8 months. Its been a frustrating year. Good news is we both got decent promotions recently and my wife's car has just been paid off, so we're hoping to kill those bills by spring.
Whats even cooler is we have an older entertainment system, still on vcr, no surround sound or DVD. We were at a friends house who were laughing at us (not in a mean way). So I asked my wife what she would rather do, spend $2000 and get a realy ice entertainment system or a Tandem. She said the tandem.
Has promise. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully we'll start test riding after Christmas. |
