ANGIOPLASTY UPDATE(10 posts)

ANGIOPLASTY UPDATERISKDR
Dec 16, 2002 9:35 AM
some weeks back i posted about my shocking need for an angioplasty.

it has been five weeks now and i took my first bike ride since. i was amazed at how low the percieved effort was on hills that had me out of breath before. on one hill my reart rate hit 157 and i was still at

a conversational pace. my breathing was relaxed and i had absolutely no evidence of lactic accid in my legs. when i had the stress test that led to my hospitalization they shut the test down at a heart rate of 120 and shipped me off to the hospital.
Wow! Glad to hear you're going well!JRinCA

I can still remember where and when I saw 192bpm on a steep climb. Freaked me out! Get well soon.

hope your recover is a good one!

One of my clients is heavily involved in Angioplasty, you may want to see what they are doing: short version is they coat the stent inserted after angioplasty through reformulation of paclitaxel...anti-cancer drug... and the scar tissue that normally grows...doesn't. worth a read IMHO.

enjoy the ride! Jim

scar tissue forming in the stent is a very serious problem in about 20% of cases. my understanding is that the coated stents are not yet available in this country. if scar tissue does form and block the stent there is a procedure here called brachytheropy where they radiate the inside of the stent and that prevents regrowth of scar tissue. the whole thing is a major pain in the butt.

anyway, it is good to be able to ride and hike again. i have a hike scheduled for december 21st. will do a short hike to ice house saddle in the mount baldy area of so california. hopefully weather will cooperate till then. after that it is snowshoe time. looking forward to seeing some of my summer trails covered in white.

but they're working on it, just thought you might want to be aware, I'm told it's promising stuff. Planned for release next year or '04, I believe. Jim

thanks for the input. i try to keep up on this stuff. a friend of mine had to have his re done three times. each time at 6 weeks he was

filled in with scar tissue. he finally went to scrips and had the ratiation. he has been good for a year and a half now.

Johnson & Johnson is in a neck/neck race with Angiotech for the coated stent thing. Both are really close to market, worth watching for you and your buddy. Jim
