So I went and stood in the rain yesterday for a little over three hours. When I wrote "rain" I'm not referring to little misty precip, or drizzle, or fog.

I'm talking about over four inches of rain in three hours. Yountville (site of the cross Nationals) is flooded today, folks are being evacuated, and I'm taking a break from repairing my fence, assessing the damage to the car that was parked outside last night during the 100 mph winds, and waiving to the TV news guys that are shooting video of all of the cement roofing tiles littering the streets, the garage doors that are caved in, and the gutters that are twisted(look for me on Channel 7 tonight) to post these photos of people on bikes playing in the rain.

These are the only two pictures that worked Sami. I was having major wet camera issues (water in the hot shoe killing the flash and water in one of the shutter release buttons causing the camera to fire continuously)

I fell here too, like about 1000 other people. The rain filled the puddles in the mud so it was impossible to tell how deep it was, and with some many people racing, the best lines changed every lap. It was pretty soft mud so it didnt hurt, except there were some rocks under the mud...so ive got a nice little tear in on my backside. Funny, when you were on the course it seemed like it was almost all mud, but looking back i guess it was mostly pavement.
Tripoding a turn.Pete.

On top of Black Mountain at 7am I was unable to stay on the singletrack more than half the time, and the gusts whipped the rain so hard in my face it felt like someone was throwing gravel at me. That's what it sounded like when the drops peppered the frame of my bike too. I have gone 40mph downhill through rain before, and it was nothing like this. I have no idea what the wind speed was, but it was strong.

Later on Russian Ridge, I encountered a bad stretch of adobe clay - the type that turns your 2.1 tires into 3.5, and at some point, when they don't fit in the frame anymore, you are forced to walk through the mess instead. Luckily, the wind was so strong the mud blew off at the top of the tires and I was able to ride through it, leaning into the gale, going slightly sideways like a sailboat against the wind.

I saw no other riders on my way.

How do you get away with that?NCN
Dec 16, 2002 11:50 AM
Here in New England, we get castigated by trail nazis for riding when it's humid. OK, I exaggerate, but I'm sure we'd get shot if we rode in (gasp) actual rain.

Except for 100 yards of boggy fireroad, I rode trails that...Biking Viking

...hold up well in the rain. Then a significant portion of my ride was paved, but the shoulder was so full of debris it could almost pass for a dirt ride.

Interesting what these substances called "rain" and "mud" can do to a CX race. Still, part of me would like to try it in those weather conditions, just once. I feel like I haven't had the true experience just yet. Doesn't look like that'll happen anytime soon here in Tucson though.

Great pics. Love the one of the guy doing the bellyflop.

Up your way this morning checking out all the storm damage. Boy, talk about carnage. Good time to be in the roofing and fence business. Our friends live across the way on Bear Place. Looks like that area and above really took it hard. Your side of Keller didn't look too bad but I probably missed some of it. Back to repairing my fence. Cheers.
