His website is http://speeddream.com/. Call him up... he's very helpful and patient with advice, questions, spoke specs, etc... we had several 15 minute phone calls on his dime. His prices are reasonable but not the lowest as he's a one-man shop. He has an excellent reputation -- quality builds are very important to me.

I'm very happy with the wheelset I purchased from him a few months ago.
ooooooo, nice ride! (nm)Kitchenware

When did you get that bike?

I can't even keep up with you and your bikes. Do you still have that sweet slingshot?

Do you see a 29"er ss in your future?

I picked it up recently... just a few weeks ago.

The Slingshot is sold (after 8-9 years!)... the Merlin Echo came and went quickly... the Slim Chance was just sold (after 6-7 years of... mostly collecting dust)... and the XCE has been ridden once since I have a SS going again... heh.

As for the 29"er... I'm shopping but I can't really afford it right now... hopefully soon!
Hey aosty, tell me about your Dean.....Jmac17

Nice disc/wheel setup! Is that a SS specific or a convert? Couldn't really tell from the angle of the pics. Have any comments on their frames? Looking into getting a Ti SS frame to put my upgraded parts on, but get mixed reviews on Dean.

Thanks ahead for any input.
sure...aosty

The Dean started life as a Dean Private made out of Reynolds 853 (steel) tubes. Kam (on the SS board) had Vulture Cycles replace the bottom bracket shell with an eccentric unit (for chain tension), removed the derailleur hanger, removed cable guides, removed V-brake bosses, and added the disc brake brace. He also had the pimp gold powdercoat finish done by a local painter.

So yes, it is a SS-specific frame now.

The ride is really sweet... the most comfortable hardtail I've ever owned, excellent handling, rails (even with a probably-too-long 100mm fork), stable at speed, etc.

I've also heard mixed reviews... Dean can be _very_ slow.

Whoa! Sounds like you did some nice modifying to that Private! I've noticed quite a few people putting the 100 forks on their rigs....all notice the change in geometry, but adjust the riding tactics to have the extra "cush" I guess.

My brother just put a Fox Vanilla 125 on his(Psycle Works F/S..change in geo all the same)

I've looked into the new Deans, @ $1,100, are they up to the ticket??

What do you know about the SID forks? I see people talking about them being noodly(?)! Whatever that means. I see a lot are going to the Fox Float RLC on their SS. I have an RL on my geary! But I think they're about a pound heavyer than the SID.

I purchased a set of King hubs laced to Valiant rims from Dave over two years ago. Excellent quality but not cheap (just about $600). They were my first set of good wheels and I noticed a big difference in the ride. I weigh 190 pounds and I ride very agressive New Jersey rocky, rooty singletrack and the wheels have held up very well. Check the reviews under wheelsets, he has an astounding 4.94 out of 5 for 48 reviews.

Last year I had to replace the rims.. Dave made me a heck of a deal.. And he stands behind what he builds.. As far as I'm concerned Dave is the guy to build your wheelset.. He's always available for tech suport too.
Call Dave and have a word with him..Locoman

(You'll have to look the number up).

Had him build me a set in 2000 w/ Velocity VXC's laced to CK's and never been happier. He did a great job, they've held up.

Give him a call let him know about how you ride, your kind of bike, etc... and see what he has to say.

They were a great investment.

I got a set of Velocity Aeroheat's on Hadley hubs 3 years ago. I probably have well over 2000 off road miles on them and aside of a few broken spokes (replaced with the supplied spares) they have been true and trouble free. They are definitely expensive ($700) but in hindsight I would have to say they are worth it if your keeping the bike and riding frequently. I am 240# and I was a little uneasy about riding on such a light set of wheels but as I said earlier they have held up great.
