Help - Palm Springs - Joshua Tree - last minute trip.seether106

Long time lurker, from Pennsylvania.....Where it's cold. Not as cold as some of you other guys, but cold enough for me.

Company is sending me on a last minute trip to Palm Springs, as in I leave tomorrow morning. I'll only be there until Friday afternoon. Since Joshua Tree is right next to where I'll be working I'm hoping I might get a short ride in. I won't be able to take my bike, a old Joshua X0 by coincidence. I'm not sure if I will even get a chance to ride, until I asses our customers issues, but I'm hoping I do.

What kind of trails are there? simple single track or some nice technical stuff? I'm not a pro, but I have some decent skills and will try just about anything. I hope riding the trainer in the basement for the past month has kept my legs/lungs in shape. I really don't care what it is, it will just be nice to get out.

I'm hoping to find a bike shop were I might be able to rent a bike and ride to some trails. I'll be working in and around Twenty-Nine Palms area. I got the names of 4 rental places off the web, Big Horn, Burnett Bicycle Barn, Canyon Bicycle Rentals, and Mac's Bike Rentals, but I have no idea what kind of bikes they rent.

Any bike shops that you think might let me get a demo?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can email me or post back. Thanks....

I'm so looking forward to some warm weather and sun..........

Your posts and pictures are keeping me motivated to try to stay in shape over the winter, Thanks...
Hope I caught you before you left....namaSSte

Mac's aka Tri-A-Bike rocks! I rented an NRS Air from them for $95 for 4 days. They also gave me some hand drawn maps of local trails which provided more riding than could be done in that time. Give em a try and tell them the guy from Ohio sent you in. Post back if you want me to give you the skinny on Palm Springs trails (the ones I rode) and I'll e them to ya. Otherwise ask the guys at Mac's. Have fun, there is some good stuff there around the Clara Burgess Trail.
there is a 24-hour course nearby. Trail reviews, Ildylwild.(nm)chickenlegs

I think there's like one dirt road for riding in J Tree. The Palm Springs area has many options, the easiest to get to are the Goat Trails where you can explore for a couple hours. From there you can also grunt up to Murray Peak and come down Clair Burgess, a beautifully exposed singletrack. Other trails are either best done as shuttles or are under 'voluntary' closure to 'protect' big horn sheep mating season, (do the fish and game folks know they're all hanging out on the lawn at the Ritz Carlton?). The local shop in town has all the info. And use slime tubes, there's cholla cactus everywhere.

Thanks to those who responded.

I just talked to Tri-A-Bike and I think they might be my best bet. They are right by where I'll be working and they rent bike racks too. They told me a lot of the trails are closed because it is big horn mating season, but there are still some that are always open.

Just about finished packing my stuff. Tomorrow will be a fun filled day of sitting on an airplane for a total of about 6 hours - Pittsburgh-Atlanta-Palm Springs. It will give me time to catch up on my Dirt Rag reading.

It's supposed to be in the high 70's the next 3 days. A bit of a change from the Burgh's current high temp today of 20.

Lets hope I can straighten out our customers system quick. I'll regret it until spring, if I don't get to ride while I'm there. If I get to ride it will probably be on Friday. I'll be taking my digital camera along, so watch for good news and pictures.

Any tips on getting through the metal detectors wearing SPD shoes? Just kidding.

Thanks again.

Too much work. I won't have time to do any riding. Such a bummer. The 80 degree temperature is doing a lot to lift my spirits though. I can't abandon a customer, especially when the person in charge of the office is the wife of the chief of the tribe. I was treated to lunch in the high rollers room of the casino owned by the tribe.

A little more work in the office tomorrow and I fly back home to pittsburgh.

I did take some pictures. I hope to run to the wind mill field tomorrow to take a picture. I drove past it and it was amazing.

Later...
