Using LX cranks on a singlespeed? (X-Post)Fat-tire

In the process of converting a frame I won this weekend into a SS using old parts, includeing a LX crankset. I can't just take the big and small rings off, correct? Can I get new bolts, or spacers, so I can bold the middle rind down tight?
BMX bolts, $5 or so from LBS (nm)Paul B

I just did the same thing about a month ago using a 2000 LX crankset. BMX bolts worked perfect.

Are there any downfalls or shortcomings to riding a singlespeed on flat land other than maybe not having a low enough gear for high speed cruising? I was thinking about turning my spare frame into a budget, old skool(old Haro) commuter. My biggest question in the gear in the back, do they make single gears that will fit on a Shimano freehub? What about a chain tensioner? Is that an XT for a chain tensioner? Thats a shame, I'll send you my old LX to use as a tensioner and I'll use the XT for what it was intended for, shifting. Sound fair?

The downfall is that you can and will get spun out on flatland if you pick a gear conducive to climbing, however if you pick something a little taller (maybe 34-12 or so) you won't get quite so spun out. Shimano makes DX BMX Gears that fit a mountain cassette, you'll need some spacers from a few old cassettes, or someone on the ss board sells a kit. you can use an old deraileur for a tensioner, or get a surly singleator, or Phil makes one, or, if your lucky you might be able to find a perfect combination of front and back gears to let you run without a tensioner. I got lucky and found an old Specialized RockHopper frame with a semi horizontal forward facing drop out, which works great.

Now for the redirect: The folks on the SS board know way more than I about the subject, and are very friendly.

XT was all I had for a tensioner so I slapped it on. I'm going to try and see if I can get lucky with the tension if I remove it. I just haven't had the time to try recently.

As for the rear cog, I used an old XT cassette and just pulled off the 16 tooth. It's definately the cheesey, low budget way to go but this was just a side project. There are lots of single gears that will fit on a freehub as far as I know.

If your interested in more info poke around on the SS board. That's where I got a lot of questions answered.
