| Anybody like their Tricky D!ck? (seatpost that is...) | An Inquiring Mind.... Feb 19, 2003 8:25 PM | | Howdy-
Anyone here ever (a) demo or (b) own and use a Tamer Tricky D!ck (gotta love the naughty word scan-bot...) Titanium suspension seatpost?
I'm considering buying one for the wife - she rides a Gary Fisher Genesister hardtail and the East Coast rocks and roots are a bit harsh w/out rear suspension..
Anyone?
Bueller?
Gracias,

p.s. I bet no one remembers me. |
| I'm using an alloy one right now | jw25 Feb 20, 2003 2:11 PM | | and so far, so good. I tested a Cane Creek first, and found it to be too much - the longer links give a lot of travel, but they also swing you back farther, and require more height between saddle and seat.
I ordered the Tricky D*ck without a test ride, and I've been happy with it. If set up right, with about a third sag, you just kind of float on the saddle. It does top out with a clank at times, but setting it up soft helps with this, and I've yet to bottom it out. You don't feel the travel as much as a telescoping post, but if you look down, the saddle's constantly moving. I haven't noticed any odd feeling while pedaling, so the saddle to pedal distance seems to stay pretty constant.
I do wish someone made a cover for it, since all those pivots attract muck, and the shaft is basically open to the elements - there's no seals, which keeps it stiction-free, but means dirt and water get in.
I booted mine with a chunk of inner tube, but the combination of hard edges and tight rubber meant it didn't last long. A neoprene and velcro boot would work better, but the only one made (for the Cane Creek) is too big. I may try to whip something up myself, if I can find some thin neoprene fabric.
I'm on the East coast, too (central PA), and this is just the ticket for rocks and roots - not full suspension, but a lot more compliance. At 145 lbs, I'm running around 5 turns of preload, so the stock spring may be light enough for the wife. |
