| My OTHER passion | Cabin Fever Feb 19, 2003 9:39 PM | | This is what keeps me active and therefore sane when biking is not real option at the time. like now. Ulimate Frisbee is on my list of the 4 best (non-sexual) things to do in the world: mountain biking, ultimate frisbee, skydiving, and moshing. that's where it is at. Anyone else play ultimate here? this time of the year, i get in much more playing than riding. |
| re: My OTHER passion | DIRTJUNKIE Feb 19, 2003 10:52 PM | | That is a great sport and an awesome crosstraining sport for mtb. I have never played it but I am a pretty good frisbee player. Have you ever played frisbee golf? It's not quite as athletic but it is challenging. |
| re: My OTHER passion | dutdut Feb 20, 2003 6:53 AM | | I have never played Ultimate, but discgolf is my first passion. I have been playing for about 13 years now. It's a great sport. I'm lucky enough to live about a mile from arguably the best course in the world. |

| Delaveaga, Santa Cruz, CA | dutdut Feb 20, 2003 9:27 AM | | http://www.jahr.net/discgolf/ |
| I've played there. | troy Feb 20, 2003 10:43 AM | | I used to play Morley Field a lot when I was in college and have played in Santa Cruz several times. Definitely a nice track. |
| I've played there. | dutdut Feb 20, 2003 11:28 AM | | Morley was the first course I ever played. I went to State for a year. That place is out of control. I played with a different frame of mind back then. Back then I'd go out with one Viper and looked forward to the "bowl hole". I had to get out of there if I ever wanted to graduate...Now it's more about beating my personal best everytime. I carry a lot more discs. Both ways are fun though. |
| re: My OTHER passion | guido_96 Feb 20, 2003 4:47 AM | | yep...run/run/run, stop, cut, run, catch, toss, sprint, stop, catch, toss...repeat until beat, head to bar for beers!!... |
| When balls dream........they dream they are frisbees | LakeRaven Feb 20, 2003 4:50 AM | | Freestyle junkie here. Love to chase a sweet floater with good z's and play 3 tricks then after the catch rip it back to the next player. I can hardly find two people to go riding let alone find a bunch to play ultimate. I would love it though. I used to play back in the 70's and 80's. |

Got a custom boom from Ted Bailey several years ago and really enjoy taking it out on calm wind days and hucking it 40 yards then watching it return and hover in front of me, taunting me to try to catch it...
BTW...Probably riding Palos or Waterfall Glen on Saturday AM (depending on weather and which bike is running...) |
| re: My OTHER passion | Ace Mulligan Feb 20, 2003 4:57 AM | | I played it! 25 years ago. A great game! |
| great photo Ace... | JAK Feb 20, 2003 7:13 AM | | Catching a frisbee on Bako concrete in the 70's...just plain classic! |
| LOL! | Ace Mulligan Feb 20, 2003 7:27 AM | | That's about right! Bako concrete..you could fry and egg on that stuff from April until October. Too bad youth is wasted on the young, I'd still love to have those hops! |
| Ever seen a frisbee split in half? | GirchyGirchy Feb 20, 2003 6:04 AM | | I was playing frisbee with a friend about seven years ago, using an old Kellogg's Corn Flakes thing my parents got in a cereal box. I tossed it to him, and he attempted to balance it on his finger by sticking it in the middle of the disc. Somehow, it immediately blew apart into two exact halves, it was weird! It didn't have a scratch or split on it at all before that.
But anyway, I agree, Frisbee is a great sport, especially of the ultimate variety. |
| How about soccer? | michigantammy Feb 20, 2003 6:23 AM | | It's a great sport. You can play outdoor as well as indoor. Although I have never played (due to a weak ankle), but am a great spectator :) and a soccer mom. I've seen Pele playing in Portland Oregon, in person, when he was with the New York Kicks(?). Portland used to have an outdoor professional team. I'm not sure if they have one now.
I've played frisbee golf, but not ultimate frisbee. Looks like the ultimate frisbee is somewhat similar to soccer....but using hands (with a frisbee), instead of legs (with a ball). Am I correct?
Tammy (long on passion, but short on talent) |
| I used to play... | Gill-Again Feb 20, 2003 6:08 AM | | but I got tired of always being injured. I played in the D.C. area for several years, but am now officially retired.
Great sport though, I just wish I had younger knees so I could still play... |
| I love ultimate... | tommyrod74 Feb 20, 2003 6:42 AM | | Undefeated Intramural Champs 2 years running in college. I just wish I lived in a big enough city to have a league (my friends in DC and Atlanta still play). In Greensboro, NC (my home) you can occasionally find pickup games at least, when I lived in Hickory, NC, no one knew that other sports existed outside of Nascar.

| re: My OTHER passion | Doug Feb 20, 2003 7:38 AM | | I play most every weekend in the summer. I've played in supercompetative leagues, but I don't know enough people to actually play. They tend to be 'if I don't know you, don't expect me to involve you in the play'. Kinda frustrating when you see the disc forced to 5'6" guys with no ups or speed when you are 6'4" with speed and ups and covered by some slow as mollasses tall guy. But thats just me being bitter. While it was nice to play in more competative leagues, I prefer the more laid back and fun highschool/college guys I know.
Ultimate is by far the most anaerobic sport I play, and I've played them all. Its a lot like soccer, but in soccer its easier to get a few seconds of rest. In ultimate its gogogogogogogogogogogo, score run down the field so you are not the last guy who has to sit and make room for anyone waiting to play. Then do it all over again.
You can tell a die hard ultimate player. Just watch their face when someone grabs their best disc and skips it on a parking lot. You'd think they took a brillow pad to their new Ti Seven. |
