More lifting questions.(12 posts)

More lifting questions.Mojo Man
Feb 20, 2003 7:25 AM
I promised there would be more questions after I started lifting, and I thought I'd better keep my word.

I did some serious lifting (for me, anyway) Tuesday and my legs are still a bit sore. I am going to workout after work, but I'm wondering if I should skip the legs, go for the usual, or just push lighter weights around. I could probably still do the normal routine, but I don't want to injure myself.

Should I just stick to the upper body today? It will be Saturday before I'm back in they gym.

i think, if you're doing legs more than twice in a week, it's probably a bit much. Muscles need time to repair in order to get bigger and stronger. The legs have big muscles, and twice in a week is plenty. I am assuming you're not circuit training.
That sounds about right.Mojo Man

I'll stick to upper body, and maybe do a 30 minute spin. Legs should be fine by Saturday.

Thanks

Upper bod..and if your legs are still sore try spinning the knots out on the bike or skip doing legs till sunday or monday. Are you lifting in lue of doing base miles on the bike? I ask cuz base miles should come before strenght training..IMO

Due to some issues at home, I haven't ridden in quite some time. If I'm at home, there's no way I have time. I get very little sleep as it is and I just can't sacrifice any more to get bike time in. I eat lunch in my office and come in a few minutes early so I can spend an hour in they gym before I go home. I'm hoping this situation is straightened out in the next 90 days.

That said, I will spin tonight rather than do the elliptical trainer. Trust me, if I had the opportunity to ride, I probably wouldn't feel the need to go to the gym.

Do just the upper body work for now, and help the legs recover by getting blood flowing to them - ride the stationary bike on a low-medium resistance for 20-30 minutes.

and what really helped my leggs recover fast was to always do a light spin for 30 -60 minutes after lifting, either on spin bike or your regular bike. Just take it super easy, get the lactate out of the leggs. There still tired but not as much. Active recovery really works!

try taking a glutamine supplement after lifting. also, make sure you eat after lifting. the glutamine will help your muscles recover faster.

I second the glutamine, its expensive but worth it. I hit 5 to 10 grams two to three times a day. I have been in the gym alot lately (everyday). My lifting partner is an ex trainer and really ripped and swears by the stuff. It has really helped my recovery and boosted my gains. Also, twice a week is two much if you are going heavy or just starting out (unless you are on the juice).

anything less than 4 days recovery between hard lifting workouts, and youre wasting your time.

Its not the oldfashioned Arnold way of doing it, but truth is any workout you do in less than that time is just tearing down the fibers you're in the process of trying to build up.

Id' say skip the legs until Saturday. And eat and sleep a lot in the meantime. More rest = more growth.

I used to lift 5-6 times a week, but lately I've been going just once every 5 or 6 days. If you can keep your intensity up high enough to work all the groups you need to, I think it's just as effective. I've showed some nice gains in the last month.
