and starts laughing her @ss off saying that I am the biggest geek she's ever met. Amazed at her ridicule, I tear my eyes away from the Bachelorette for 2 seconds to summon a defense. First, I must determine why she is saying this. Is it because I'm watching such mindless dribble (let's face it Trista is hot so I felt justified (in my own mind at least)). Nah, couldn't be that. Hmmm, maybe it was because I was checking out some new mtb gear that arrived while I was at work. Yeah, that has to be it. OK, the whole truth is really this. I was checking out the gear in the way any self respecting gear geek would - by testing it out. So there I sat, Trista smiling in the background, me wearing gym shorts, Pearl Izumi Typhoon booties and my new Deuter Race-X Air hydropak. I guess I see her point on the booties (I did have to make sure they fit though) but the Deuter pack....c'mon give me a break. A guy has to stay hydrated doesn't he?

Anyway, the pack is awesome, the booties are sweet, and my wife still thinks I am a total freak. Don't you all try out new gear when you get it???

Peace,

Scott (wondering what's on the tube tonight...)

being cooped up has a really strange effect on already unstable people..

The booties really did it for me. We're all guilty of it I think.

But the Bachelorette, come on man, must have been really bored eh?

Thanks for the laugh.

... it was all I could do not to wear them around the house like jammies... Well, a couple witnesses will claim I *did*, but they were just jealous of my spanky new coture.

Pluses:

*
Talk about credit-card confidence-- you feel like youre packed in bubblewrap, wearing these things. Its GREAT. Inspires me to do pretty amazingly stupid things... Well, all in the quest for glory gold and skillz eh.

* Toasty warm in winter. I use them for raingear. Really.

* Snug and stay put, no shifting about or slipping at unfortunate moments.

* You can buy them for canadian money! The nice folks at http://www.simonsbikeshop.com/ have (had, at least as of last month) a special going on where they'll sell you a full arm + leg set for $99Can.. thats $68US or so. Happy day.

Minuses:

*
Well, in theory I will do something really stupid in them one day...

* Toasty warm. That is, uncomfortable over ~60 degrees; 360degree wraparound lycra so they dont breathe spectacularly well in the hot. I keep a pair of Dainese open-backs for summer and fall riding.

* Snug and stay put-- that is, you had darn better loosen the leg armour way up when climbing or else strap them to your pack, or else the elastic is going to just wear away at your knee tendons. Theyre not climbing gear. Also, the arms are snug, can bind up on long-sleeve jerseys at the elbow a little, have to be a bit careful how you pull them on.

* $70US is still a chunk of change for two-season / downhill gear, of course.

Fabulosity:

*
Well in the eye of the beholder of course. You look like less of an Imperial Stormtrooper in them than you do in the Dainese... still pretty blocky apparel. I like 'em... but then my beloved Action Bike!TM has been described by some as looking "like a tractor", so clearly my own tastes run to these things.

You could always have pink flamingos monogrammed on them or something, I expect. Or sequins, cant go wrong with sequins..

"You look like less of an Imperial Stormtrooper in them than you do in the Dainese"...this sounds like a minus to me. Get a white full face and you're set. You can strap a small boombox to your hydro pack and blast the Imperial March theme all the way down the mountain!

Another plus that probably won't affect most people, other than really big(me)or really small folks (I think KriZkit may have done this as well), you can order custom sizes direct from Roach for no extra charge.

all that white makes you look quite like a snowdrift. Take a spill and you might not be found for days (although the music might keep you entertained).

I hear they make you go faster too. Wonder if Louis Garneau can do a custom setup for the team to include something "pretty"????

...because I busted out laughing when I pictured you sitting on the couch, in full biking garb while watching The Bachelorette. I too am guilty, I wore my first clipless shoes all over the house to break them in and routinely wear my biking shorts around the house because they're comfy. Not to mention the padded private area, I could get in a fight and not fear the potential reprocussions of getting kicked in the groin.

On a side note, I saw your post about the good weather in Ohio today... Where you located? I'm up north by the lake I live in Elyria and work in Westlake and routinely ride Vultures Knob, Mohican and all the local rails to trails deals...
We gotta hook up.....namaSSte
Feb 20, 2003 10:00 AM
I promise not to kick you in the groin too. I live in Bay Village so we are practically neighbors. We ahve some fun local trails in Huntington Woods and ride the Valley often during the week. I don't know if you night ride but I am always up for doing that since I hate night riding alone. Let me know if you want to get a ride in, I'd be totally up for it.

Peace.

Scott
Excellent, more riding buddies!Blade

Ack, the only problem is that I've only been riding 2 months after over a year off, but I'm showing a vast improvement. I'm still fairly slow and I'm limited to distances of 10 miles. However, if you wouldn't mind waiting up for a slow rider, I'd be happy to ride. My friend Shaun just bought a Kona Kikapoo from Century Cycles in Rocky River last Thursday and the bastig has event ridden it yet. We're riding Saturday at a paved trail... It's on Ford/Fjord Rd which is off West River(the Midway Mall street) It's an out and back trail with some small off-road sections, almost 3 miles each way. It's good to get to ride if you can't actually get to a decent place like the Knob.

One last thing, were you at the Cleveland Area Mountain Bike Assosciation last month in Parma? I think I talked to someone at the meeting who's from Bay Village
that wasn't me at the CAMBA mtg....namaSSte
Feb 20, 2003 4:49 PM
probably Mike Woods if I had to guess. No worries on speed man. If we do the Huntington trail it won't be an issue. Its a lot of trails in a very small space so you can't get too far apart even if you try. It's less endurance riding (obviously from the description) but pretty technical so you can brush up on your handling skills after being off the bike. Bring Shaun and his virgin wheels along (disclaimer: his Kikapu might get dirty..). E-mail me. I definitely am riding Saturday and Sunday (oh yeah, and tonight). Let me know if either day works for you on the weekend and Ill get you directions.

Peace

Never had a pack that fit so good. I have the Superbike model. The only problem is I can fit a ton of stuff in it so it's a bit heavy. But that just makes me stronger, right?

And yes, you are a geek. But I watched it too. Laura insisted. She was on the trainer and I sat on the couch.

John
I appreciate the confirmation......namaSSte
Feb 20, 2003 12:36 PM
and that was without even really trying to be a geek....

As for the Deuter, I resisted using a pack for a long time due mainly to comfort. With the way this allows air flow (I know this because I did go to the frdidge for an apple during a commercial) and feels even when just sitting on the couch, I think I'm sold. The Race-X has just enough room for a 100oz bladder, some light clothing, tools, and some food. You could defintiely use it to race and it still has enough room for a full day out on the trail.. Not an epic pack but epics are out anyway, I mean, what if I missed a rerun of Trista?????
I have a GREAT example of that!Blade

My friend's dad is really into the classic Mustangs and was restoring an 65 Fastback, making it look like a Shelby clone. To do this, he had to swap the entire interior to the 'Pony' interior. We're talking dash, steering wheel, front and back seats, console, etc. Ended up being around $1500 for the interior. We got back from the movies and he's got the interior mocked up in the living room watching a video about Mustangs. We stopped, turned around and left. I don't think it even registered that we were there...
