Some of that looks a bit steep for me, but that last picture makes me want to go now!!

Maybe next year things will be going better for me with time off and $$$. I will be relying heavily on muscle memory.

Have you ever personally seen an avalanche? Of course, we don't have them here, and I found it creeping into my mind the whole time I was at Whistler. And I was just on the green and blue runs on the bottom half of the mountain! lol

But a buddy (who I have posted pix of here riding) was with a group who triggered one in Canada last year. They were fortunately at the top of the ridge; and get this, one of the guys was standing when suddenly, the snow just disappeared from under the front of his skis!I've personally only seen recent slides.

I would love to see one happen though and you can be sure i'll have a camera....whether i can get it out in time thats another question.

take it easy stine.

ps: almost had me another great sunset pic...but have you ever seen this one? (taken last year about this time)
Avalanche/camera storyAK Ken

Your comments reminded me of doing avalanche control outside the ski area boundary at Breckenridge one morning. 4 of us (2 teams of 2) were throwing hand charges in some chutes on Peak 7 (now inside the ski area, I think) and had gotten NO reaction--no cracks, no sluffs, no nothing. My partner and I had one charge left, and we threw it just to get rid of it since you can't ride the lifts carrying explosives once the lift is open to the public.

There was maybe 18 inches of new snow and I was standing on an outcrop that stuck out into the gully a bit. I set my pack on my skis and dug out my camera to take pictures of our pals across the chute. Just after our charge went off my camera went out of focus and I realized it was because the foreground was moving.

The chute that we were just about to ski and had only thrown the extra charge in to get rid of it was now sliding 5 feet deep and had broken WAY above us. It looked as though it could overrun our little outcropping and I was yelling at my bud to get out of there as I flailed around with my pack on my skis trying to get turned around to ski away. The slide passed maybe 3 feet in front of my tips but didn't hit us and went another thousand feet or so down the hill into the flats. Ah, those were the days.

If you're really good I'll tell you about the time I was buried up to my neck. I was only 5'8" that morning, but stretched to my current 6'1" during the exciting ride down the hill.

Okay, in the interest of helping you stay awake....2 other rangers from Rocky Mountain Park and I went to Jackson to try a winter ascent of the Grand Teton. We spent a miserable five days slogging through a metric chit load of new snow, hanging out at the lower saddle in parkas and half bags, and generally failing at our stated goal.

We finally used up the last of our grub so we started down the valley headed for civilization. We'd left our skis at the fixed rope just below the lower saddle, and as we skied along the edge of Middle Teton Glacier (I think) a slide broke above us and took me for about a 400 foot ride down the hill. Couldn't get out of my pack or skis but dumped my poles and started backstroking. My skis were down in the slower moving sliding layer and the 'surf effect' of the upper layers of snow was trying to flip me over forward, so staying halfway upright took all my attention.

My buds had gotten out of the edge of the slide, and as I went bobbing by one reminded me to "KEEP YER PHREEKIN HEAD UP!!!!!!" Oh, yeah, I'da never thought of that myself.

In any case, as the snow declerated I stretched upward all I could (hence the height increase) and ended up with my head above the surface but my arms maybe a foot under the snow. The age hardening of the snow occurred INSTANTLY and I was unable to pull my arms out from below the surface; my pals had to come down and dig me out. We found both ski poles were broken, and I could have used some fresh undies, but other than that no damage. We splinted my poles with an ice axe (does wonders for the balance of the stick) and continued down.

My skis had stayed on through the whole ordeal, but I fell shortly after and one popped off and ran away down the hill, smashing into a rock and breaking the binding.

We ultimately ended up spending an extra nite out which greatly distressed our senior bud, who was monumentally embarassed to be a ranger and having other rangers believing he was overdue and maybe less than perfect. Horrors. He decided he'd rather take a chance on dying (literally) than dying from embarassment, so he skied on out that nite by himself while the other guy and I holed up in a snow cave we'd dug on the way in 6 days before. We wired up my binding, fine tuned the splints on my poles, and skied out the next morning. Since we were out of food we weren't distracted by kitchen chores and were able to get an early start.

Overall, a stellar trip.

Ken

Just as you posted I had to go test steam stop valves and ajust the O2 on the incinerator...

I had a pilot like your perfect ranger buddy...He would risk life and aircraft to get to dinner parties(promotional opertunities).

And Yes I'm on nites and counting down to AZSF.

That sure is pretty paintwork on Jim's bike, though. It must be the second-prettiest bike color that I think I've seen.

Although it sounds like it's a mess on I-70, but 14 inches reported at Copper!

So how do the Copper bowls compare to the Vail bowls? I haven't adventured enough at Copper yet, been sticking to the blues, especially on the right side of the mountain, but next time we need to check out the bowls.
