| I'm getting my warrenty frame soon!! (pay for labor?!!) | alias Mar 21, 2003 6:12 PM | | My 2002 giant warp ds3 frame cracked at the down tube seat mast junction and I took it in and they said they'll look at it and see what they could do. The wrench called me back today and said that giant is sending me out a new 2003 ds2 team blue frame, great I said but I'd really like a silver one. He said he'll try but if he can't get one I'll take the blue. Anyways he said that since it is over 60 days old I'll have to pay for the labor to put the parts back on the new frame. Does this sound right to anybody?? I get a crapped up frame and have to pay for the labor cause the company is too cheap??!! |
| well they aren't going to assemble it for free | Jm Mar 21, 2003 6:32 PM | | and ive never heard of a bike shop being compensated for labor involved in that kind of situation. Yes it is normal to be charged labor by a bike shop if they are doing something to your bike, even if its warrenty work. |
| compensation.... | mudferret* Mar 21, 2003 8:24 PM | | ...a few years back, '98 or '97 I believe, I bought the infamous exploding Judy XC. My LBS always did the work on it for free (warranty work that is) when it blew up, and said they were compensated for that work. I can't recall where in the stream this compensation came from though...

| re: Is it any different? | Hrdkor Mar 22, 2003 7:29 AM | | Then when you have warrenty work done to your car? At some point in time the shop has to stand behind the product it pushes. You shouldn't be charged. My wrench , Vern, id do if for a 6 pak if i haden't touched it. And a 12 pak if i had attempted any work. |
| The difference... | screampint Mar 22, 2003 10:46 AM | | Bike companies don't pay for warranty work, they simply replace the part. Thus the bike shop eats the cost of labor if they do it for free.
On the other hand, the auto world has more money and the companies will compensate the dealers/garages for warranty work.
I have never heard of RS compensating a bike shop for work on any of their forks. |
| I tried once | bg Mar 23, 2003 7:21 AM | | To claim labour from a large bike company, they gave me about 1/3 the equivalent in credit, but that was after alot of arguing.
It's not cheap for the store to do warranty work, somone's gotta pay for it. But at the same time a 60 day period is too short. We do free labour/shipping for any warranty claim up to one year after sale. It's a compromise at best, frankly I'd rather see companies cut down thier "Life time frame warranty" to something more realistic like a 5 year plan as long as they can also cover labour charges on any warranty claim within those 5 years. |

| depends on shop | funkpunk Mar 22, 2003 9:05 AM | | and your relationship w/them. my replacement was built up free. but then again, it does seem like a rip when you think about it |
| depends | Carl Mega Mar 22, 2003 11:49 AM | | If there really was a legit defect and you bought the bike there- they shouldn't charge you.
I used to wrench and we never charged labor on warranty issues. And, from what I remember, some mfgrs did compensate the shop for labor under certain circumstances.
I'd calmly talk to the shop manager about the situation.
On the other hand, if you were not *really* entitled to a warranty frame and the shop gave you the hook-up big time. Eat the cost and consider youself lucky.
PS- I'd wouldn't push the color issue too much.
Cheers. |
| re: I'm getting my warrenty frame soon!! (pay for labor?!!) | Planters Mar 22, 2003 6:06 PM | | Well, being a wrench myself I have no respect for Giant as a company. If frames like yours crack and fail like that I'd see it as you initially being to cheap to buy a decent company like Specialized, or Santa Cruz. In todays market you get what you pay for and I'm sorry you LBS suckered you in with a great sale on a bike that they still got a decent margin on, but f$%k it if you can't see why the price was so cheap. So, when you frame cracks and fails again why don't you think about saving some much needed money and get a bike that has more than cool design behind and get one with some reputation. Yup. |
