| My new Gas Guzzling SUV | JJK Mar 21, 2003 11:03 PM | | I picked up this beauty for $800. from a friend at work. When he had it it was pretty ugly, dirty and just neglected. I had it buffed
out and detailed for $90 and then since i work for Discount Tire, i
had to bolt on some new Hoops.. It will get me to the trail and back
now and it didn't cost alot. Sweet deal huh ?

| Does it have the 2.6 four Cyl. in it? | Battman42 Mar 21, 2003 11:13 PM | | I had a '94 Rodeo with that engine...It was a pretty sweet vehicle.
There are still several Toopers of that Era coming up to the Geysers everyday.
It looks pretty clean...a definite bike hauler.
Good on ya' for keeping it alive.

| I think so Tim | JJK Mar 21, 2003 11:26 PM | | Hey Tim,
I was the guy standing next to you when we were cooking
our food on the grill Friday nite at SoMo. Nice meeting you.
The Isuzu has the V6 in it. I took it out to McDowell Mtn. today
and it ran good and smooth but seems a little underpowered. Any
tips on how to make it go faster ?? It has 164k on it. 5spd 4wd
Thanks again,
JohnnyK |
| Thicker oil.... | Battman42 Mar 21, 2003 11:33 PM | | I remember talking to you over the BBQ.
As for making it go faster....It sounds like it is moving $800 worth as it is.
I would just go over spark plugs and wires, check distributor condition.
If the ignition is all in good shape and it runs smooth drive it with a smile till it drops...NO PAYMENTS!!!
The only other thing that comes to mind is the airfilter...$5 might help it out.
I always try the cheap easy stuff first.
Have fun with it.

| a few things you can try for more power | Schwinng Mar 22, 2003 6:45 AM | | If your Trooper has a stock air filter, you can replace it with a higher airflow type. They cost about $40-$50, but they *are* servicable, so you can clean them regularly to keep up their efficiency level. The company's name starts with the letter "K," I believe. You can find them at most auto outlets.
Having your fuel injectors or carburetor's jets cleaned/serviced can sometimes help. Included in this routine maintenance is replacement of your gas filter, of course.
Sometimes a rotor that needs to be replaced can strangle your performance, so you'll want to have that checked out, too.
And, as the other post suggests, use premium spark plugs, too.
Seems like you got a killer deal. Your $90 did wonders for the car's appearance. Spending just a few hundred bucks more can probably enhance its performance. Even if you pay out a few hundred $s more, you still got a good deal.
Schwinng (not a mechanic, but has a '91 Camry with 184,000 miles on it, and thus knows a thing or two about ways to suck a little more performance out of an old car) |
| K&N Filter charger............ | Battman42 Mar 22, 2003 6:53 AM | | used them on everthing since my '74 Yamaha RD.
On an $800 car???
It made a nice difference on my '96 T-bird.

| K&N Filter on an $800 car? | Schwinng Mar 22, 2003 7:00 AM | | Yeah, Battman, I know K&N is a high performance air filter option. But, if the car's performance is sucking that badly, why not? Plus, he may get a few more miles per gallon, too.
Typically, Izuzu and Mitsubishi spec'd those cars in that era with too small of engines. A colleague at my work has one, and it feels like it's equipped with a 1.5 liter motor after all the miles she's put in on the car.
I've been looking for a K&N air filter for my '91 Camry, but it's never on the shelf at nearby Pep Boys auto outlet. But, I will be buying one for the same reasons as JohnnyK.
Cheers, bro. |
| The primary reason I use K&N filters is cleaning..... | Battman42 Mar 22, 2003 2:22 PM | | I live on a dirt road.
I use my trucks off road and in dirty environments.
As I have never had my vehicles dyno'd there are no numbers.
The T-bird has an Injection performance kit instead of just a replacement filter.
The Burb also has a replaced intake...
Ask the experts.... tho' as I simply use them.
Your mileage may vary.

| K&N Filter charger............ | Jrm Mar 22, 2003 7:26 AM | | I used an Amsoil filter on mine and i have one on the 4runner now. |
| The placebo effect is alive and well. | Pete. Mar 22, 2003 9:40 AM | | ...and K&N is thankful. |
| plus, if you really like them that much, its dead simple to make | Jm Mar 22, 2003 9:42 AM | | your own, for about 70-100 bucks cheaper depending on what car. |
| Agreed | FFJ Mar 22, 2003 12:06 PM | | 12 years as a wrench on cars has taught me that unless extreme care is used on the K&N's they gunk up fast and hinder performance. I would rather spend the five bucks and change the paper filter every 3000 miles with my oil change then spend the time cleaning and oiling a filter. Try a comprehensive tune-up, a fuel filter, and a higher grade of gas first.

Glad I am out of that business! |
