| Connecticut's DEP is really cracking down on poaching... | Twilight Error® Mar 23, 2003 5:02 AM | | The only legal activity in a Ct state park after dark is fishing, night riding and 'recreation' are worth a $50 citation and lecture from whichever tree cop that happens to catch you. Most of the time, they turn a blind eye to the night riding - hell, I've gone out there and run into conservation officers indulging in a bit of the night ride.
Imagine my surprise last night when I was taking a short rest at the 'scenic' overlook and a large millitary helicopter comes in over water and lights me up with a searchlight. There is an ANG base and small commercial airport across the cove, UConn's Avery Point Campus and Pfizer just down the coast and then the Thames, which is the exit to the sea for subs from the Groton base. Considering the current state of war, I'm amazed people are still allowed up there. The light turned off when got back on my bike and headed into the woods. Nobody accosted me for the rest of the evening, during which I saw 2 sapsuckers, 15 deer (Bluff has a huge overpopulation problem), a grouse and something that looked for all the world like the retreating end of a skunk.
It was the first ride of spring, the trails have dried out and its already in the low 50s. As much as I like winter, I'm glad its over. |

| I'll bet it was the HID hat got their attention. | Twilight Error® Mar 23, 2003 12:06 PM | | But now I wish I had that searchlight - I'd be able to ride with my eyes closed if I'd that thing mounted on the handlebar... |
| Instead of a HID, you could... | Biking Viking Mar 23, 2003 11:11 PM | | ...rent one of those helicopters to fly over you on your rides.

| How were the trails? | Jisch Mar 23, 2003 2:41 PM | | Up here in Northern CT, I think we've got another week until the trails are rideable. I ALMOST went on the trails today. I did some road miles to keep in shape. I did go hiking with my wife on some very unused trails and they were fine. Then I made some stunts in the woods behind my house. Kinda wish I rode on the dirt today...
The season starts March 30th for me! I'm psyched.

| You guys are way ahead | radair Mar 23, 2003 6:56 PM | | We still have a pretty good pile of snow on the ground, although we lost over a foot in the past week.
Sounds like I need a road trip south. |
| Trails here are slightly tacky in most places | Twilight Error® Mar 24, 2003 3:49 AM | | with just a couple muddy places where water usually collects. Tires just leave tracks, not ruts and your bike is clean afterward.
There may be an early season micro-mini gathering down here next month, you're welcome to join us if you want. |
| Drop me an e-mail... | radair Mar 24, 2003 6:24 AM | | ...when you have dates set. I'd love to get down there for a ride if I can.
Thanks - Rob |
