There is a scarcely-known petroglyph panel near Moab that is known to have some equinox significance. Yesterday (the morning closest to the actual Spring Equinox) my fiancee', her folks and I made a pre-dawn trek up to the well-concealed panel to see the show. We were all alone.

Just after sunrise, the movement of shadows creates the appearance of these longneck fellows walking up a hillside:

Seemingly out of nowhere, a "golden egg" suddenly appears as if it were laid by another one of the longneck figures, as in this picture. The egg is instantly projected onto the panel when the low sun shines through a shaft in the rocks:

The egg maintains its shape as it falls downwards across the panel over the next hour or so, then suddenly disappears. As it courses across the panel, it spotlights various bighorn figures. Here is the position of the egg right before its sudden disappearance:

After the disappearance of the egg, some of the other figures go through some interesting positioning among the shadows. For instance, in this final picture, the bighorn appears to be standing on a mountain ledge looking out. Of course, the case for this being deliberate seems far weaker to me than does the case for the egg.

Figured I'd just post these in case anyone here has an interest in rock art, or a general interest in things around Moab.

Good weekend rides to everyone!

The egg only appears on the morning closest to the spring equinox, but the othew shadow mages appear other days as well, correct? Maybe not every other day of the year but at least for a few weeks on both sides of the egg, I would imagine. I became nearly obsessed with rock art the first time I viewed them in Moab. Drove my riding partenrs nearly crazy. Oddly enough, a local has told me there is some primitive rock art leftover from the Seneca nation in at least one area of Pochontas County, but I've searched and searched and can never seem to locate the image. Thanks for those very cool pics.

I don't actually know the answer to your question, nor does anyone for that matter. The egg effect was only discovered a few years ago and is scarcely known. I personally think that it lasts for a few days or maybe weeks around the equinox, and I'd guess that the egg appears and disappears near different figures within the panel each morning within this frame of time.

The placement of figures on the shadows didn't really have me convinced. Seemed a little too random, though it made for some cool shots.

There is solstice panel here in Moab that blows away this equinox panel in terms of a projected effect. Email me if you'd like to hear more about it: moabdublab AT citlink DOT net.
