| Protecting frame paint finish? | elppig II Mar 23, 2003 1:30 PM | | Getting my new ride closer and closer to trail ready and I'd really like to protect the paint finish as much as possible. My previous frame got thrashed pretty good. Is it OK to use standard car wax like Mothers or something like this?
Also, any tips on protecting the chainstay? I've got a Lizard Skin protector now and have heard of the phone cord idea, but any other clever ideas? I know its going to get knicked up, just trying to do anything I can to protect that area. Thanks. |

* Yep car wax is OK on most frames so I believe
* Use some clear tape or matching coloured electrical tape to protect your frame from cable rub (Near head tube/Seatstays etc)
Chainstay protectors Ive seen:
* Bit of old tyre or tube
* Electrical tape
* Phone Cord
* Lizard Skin (The best looking/best functioning solution to be honest)
* Lizard Skin with cable ties at each end |
| chainstay protectors | NateHawk Mar 23, 2003 9:49 PM | | Here are a couple ideas I've seen (or used) as chainstay protectors.
--Zip ties. I've been using this one for awhile. Put a bunch of zip ties on your chainstay and it keeps the finish knick-free. Only drawback is that the little ridges in the ties and the spaces between the ties collect grime and it's a pain to remove.
--Coiled plastic cable housing. It's the stuff you can get to keep a couple cords running together for a length. You can find it at places like RadioShack or hardware stores. I know guys who use it and love it. Doesn't collect grime as much.
A word on Lizard Skins- I keep hearing that chain slap can put nicks in your chainstays even with Lizard Skins. Never seen it...but then again, I don't know anyone who uses Lizard Skins. |
