| Few pics from yesterdays ride at Soap Creek near Atlanta | Duckman Mar 24, 2003 6:39 AM | | This area is worn out and full of all kinds of idiots. But, its got some badass techy rocky waterbared climbs that are perfect for training. Went up all these over and over and over last Sunday, this Friday, and yesterday.
The start of a tough 1/2 mile climb thats mostly like the pics. All middlering on the blue bike (34x34). Used a 11-27 duraace cassette this day using 22frnt 3rd up back, whatever that is(23$).

Closer view up at that corner about 15yrds up. Fun eh? Ha!!

Abit around the bend. Damn creekrock waterbars. They go and go and go up the climb.

After going up and over the ridge, you go down several rough sections to a creekbed, then look up to this.

If you turn around, this is what you see..it goes up and to the right for another 70 brutal yards up countless 4x4 waterbars. All these climbs are done out of the saddle in the middlering usually. I went up and down these multi times yesterday.

After riding there for a few hours, i loaded up and rode a quick 5 miles at Blankets, which was packed. Tomac demo ride was there as well. Saw Raja and Whatever(i love that handle) riding with their newphew, as well as Hardtail in Ga. Great weekend.

The view after turning right at the "lookback" climb posted just above. Its a good burner for sure.

Spring is heading your way, guys up north.

| If your close enough | Hardtail in Georgia Mar 24, 2003 8:28 AM | | Try Going out to Gainesville trails by going north on 575 to Highway 20 then go out Hwy 369 to Gainesville only takes about an hour from Blankets and theres a lot less traffic. Just a thought, you might be too far south for that to work for you.

| Sope Creek, what's it good for? | ScubaCruz Mar 24, 2003 6:20 PM | | Hey Duckman,
With the 10 mph speed limit and the currently restriced social trail access, Soap Creek, to me, is good for that one slow tecnical climb and a fun 3 mile flat lap weaving between joggers and strollers. The weaving part gets tecnical if you get caught like a deer frozen by a pair of those bouncing headlights! Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean!
Was gonna mention the last minute Sunday ride at Fort Mountain - East West Loop, but I saw you were sticking with the "city loop"! Did I every forget how tough that short 14 mile ride around the mountain was! With a few regroup/restarts, it was till over 2 hours! Legs and lungs felt like they'd been pushed at a near race pace run. Great ride though. Got a few pics I'll post when I developed, stone age camera.
See ya around.

| The only thing Soap Creek is good for is | Duckman Mar 24, 2003 7:22 PM | | ...training. Have been training hard for 3 months now using block short interal high intensity reps. 3 days on, 2 recover at the moment. been using a trainer plus hard long rides. did every climb at soap twice friday after work, chicopee/agricenter sat, soap all climbs 2 times again, then drove up and did blankets later that day for a hot lap(20:41 is my time so far)..so there:). I have never been as strong as i am now. yup on the city loop. it was awful, being all roadbed..worst ride i've ever been on. there was so much mud/snow that i'd been pretty dumb (i asked a dude who jsut got back from doing it on a new blur, which was covered compleltey w/ mud. he said it sucked from all the judt thawed frozen ground and of 1/2 of the trails were snow covered)doing a long 14 mile loop that i'd already done my homework on for another time, so i knew how tough a ride it was even in the dry. solo of course, and i was starting late since fort mtn was my bail out location on the fly as i couldn't find the trailhead to carters lake earilier that day.
alas, we do what we can

| The only thing Soap Creek is good for is | ScubaCruz Mar 24, 2003 8:37 PM | | Sorry to hear you didn't like East West. Even though it was cut with a dozer years ago, I still think the trails there are a blast. Mainly because they're such a challenge. The downhills are real off the seat wish I had disc downhills runs. Then the climbs back up, real tough climbs. That one along Coolsprings Creek is still a heart buster. And the remoteness of it, once you're on the trails you don't see anyone till you're back at the parking lot! You get to go as fast as you dare alot. The views off the backside on East West out over Chatsworth were beautiful yesterday. And the steep side slopes of nothing but rock, awesome.
Try it again during a dry week and before the stinging nettles come out. Maybe you'll change your mind.
Though there won't be a GAP race there is year, the Tour de Georgia road race will come up and over Fort Mountain (on the road) April 26th on the Dalton to Gainesville leg Saturday. Might get up there for an easy Goldmine+Coolspring ride before Sunday's Conyer's Olympic Horse Park GAP race. Want to see the pros ride and get in a mtn bike ride too. Bummed about having to decide between GAP race and watching the pros downtown Atlanta Sunday! Will settle for seeing them Saturday.

| Think cause it was deep mud | Duckman Mar 25, 2003 5:10 AM | | because of the just thawed ground. Couldn't really get a fair feel for the ride because of. A few other riders were having an even harder time. Want to ride those trails tho, as i love remote trails the best. i've backpacked all the trails in Cohutta and big frog nearby over the last few years, and love to hike solo. That ride on the ease-west was the one day i should have stayed home since i hadn't really done my homework prior. More my fault then anything. again, thanks for the great info. |
