Feel the Burn!(2 posts)

Feel the Burn!porkchop

Went out for a ride on the trails behind a local college campus yesterday and wanted to make sure that I did some climbing to improve my fitness. It had been a few days since my last ride. Holy Brimstone my quads were burning! If I could have found my Leatherman I might have done an amputation right there. What should I do to get over the burn? Push on even harder? Rest? Stretch?

Burn of sore muscles, or burn from the climb only? Muscles are usually sorest 2 days after exercise. So if your quads were already sore before you started riding, there isn't much you can do. Riding is good to move the lactic acid out of the sore muscles, but it is going to hurt. But it sounds more like you were experiencing lactic acid buildup from the climb. I can't help you with this because I'm a slacker and tend to not push myself that hard. I'd just slow down or get off and walk if slowing down meant tipping over from lack of momentum. Yeah, I'm not a climbing machine.
