| Az Trail Oracle side | seanf Apr 28, 2003 6:28 AM | | Went for a ride yesterday on the Az trail near Oracle. There are still signs that say that riding above 660 feet is not allowed because of fire damage but I am pretty sure that that we did not go above 6600. Plus the fine for going above is $10,000. The fire damage we did see was prety incredible. At a couple of places I thought that we were on the wrong trail since it looks so different. Places that used to be lush and green to stop and get some shade were just dirt and some burnt stumps. Another interesting thing was that the ground was covered in flowers. They appeared to be purple lantana. But is was EVEYWHERE. It was like a purple blanket. |
| Heartbreaking | Paul B Apr 28, 2003 7:04 AM | | The first time I saw the extent of the burn damage, looking down onto Oracle Ridge from the Catalina Highway, I got physically ill. So much destruction.
Some of my favorite trails in the whole state died in those fires as well: Butterfly and Crystal Springs were great rides and didn't deserve that fate. :-(
Nice to see something is growing down there. It'll be centuries before the mountain is right again.

| You missed a Dale-worthy ride yesterday | ScottN Apr 28, 2003 7:24 AM | | Prescott - how does 2100' of climbing (and descending) in 13.1 miles sound? I'm tired today...

| Sorry I missed it! | Paul B Apr 28, 2003 7:31 AM | | I didn't see your invite 'til this morning; sounds like you had a great time!
Sunday was a humanitarian mission -- taking a friend who only infrequently rides and trying to infuse some enthusiasm back into him. But it meant riding at SoMo on the weekend, which I vowed JUST THE DAY BEFORE not to do any more.
I wonder if the park would be opposed to a posting of a "rules of the trail" sign, laminated or something, at each trailhead?

| sounds like fun..... | Gnarly1 Apr 28, 2003 7:51 AM | | ...I just did a little solo ride here in town. It's starting to get warm though....

| You wouldn't have been the only one... | ScottN Apr 28, 2003 9:05 AM | | Juan and I did a LOT of walking while Brett and AZMikey did some riding.
I thought you were at the PBC all weekend? If I knew you weren't I'd have dragged you along. We were exploring!
