Just wondering where the snow level was over in the Devil's Gulch area.
Nice ride?

| I guess this means I have to do a ride report... | Dave S Apr 28, 2003 10:03 PM | | Devil's Gulch - Sunday, April 27

Thanks to Titan, I found a Devil's Gulch ride report from a week ago. The guy did an out-and-back by riding up from the lower Devil's Gulch trailhead, and then up the mission ridge trail. He didn't get to the top of the Mission Ridge trail due to the snow.
Since we were planning to ride the road up, then starting the decent from the upper Devil's Gulch trail head (which is about 500FT below the Mission ridge trail head) , I figured that any snow we encountered would be minimal.
The 12 mile road climb up was in great shape ,no vehicles on the road yet this year because the gate is still locked, so the washboards were very minimal, but the surface was just a little bit powdery in places. As we were nearing the trailhead, snow patches were common off in the shade of the trees.
The first 2.5 miles of the singletrack was 90% covered by snow, which meant tromping through snow up to 2FT deep. There were earlier footprints that we could follow, but you had to walk very lightly, usually using your bike to spread out the weight. falling through he crust not only meant making your feet colder & wetter, but also more cuts on your calves & shins. we couldn't see any other bike tracks, so I guess we were the first two this year to ride it top to bottom.
About .5 mile before the intersection of Mission Ridge and Devil's Gulch trail, the snow finally cleared for good. The last 11 miles were in great early season shape - fast, tacky, and only 1 or 2 blowdowns, and no wash-outs.

The ride report I read last week said that the mission ridge trail should be clear of snow in a week (which means now). I don't believe it.
My ride report says that the Devil's Gulch trail (the lower of the two) will be clear of snow a month from now. If you do ride it before then, take the trail up to the snowline.

| Danka!... | anon Apr 28, 2003 11:19 PM | | I'm just trying to get an idea where the snow level is.
I've been poaching reports from a hiking website, this gives a better picture. Can't wait for the high stuff to open.
Thanks Again!
