A Fruita Roadtrip, Part I, Gooseberry.(51 posts)

A Fruita Roadtrip, Part I, Gooseberry.Pete.
Apr 28, 2003 7:18 PM
10 hours of driving, In n Out, and code brown and it was Gooseberry time.

It's a great way to break up the drive to Moab/Fruita and our timing was perfect. They had rain that morning so the Gooseberry riding was unlike any that we've done before. Lotsa puddles made traction an issue (not typical for Gooseberry which is mostly slickrock).

The rain also made getting to the mesa interesting as our tires (not exactly the most off-road friendly) pack just like MTB tires in bentonite clay.

After all of that driving, jerky, and crappy beer that Marc and Mike drank for some bizarre beer drinking ritual/challenge, they actually look like they are ready to ride.

I took a stupid endo coming down Porc. The section was a little tough than my comfort level, and I would have made it but I let my mind wander at just the wrong moment. I think I missed my landing rock and did a nice freeze frame endo. landed hard on the elbow. Same one I wreched on climbing Moore Fun. Bent my stem to a 45 deg angle. It flet like I broke my arm but I didn't and managed to ride it out. Although I look like popeye now.

Pinch flatted my front tire. supermaned into the sand. when the tire rolled off the rim in a high speed corner.

Rich pulled off a 3.5 footer with a 25-30 mph side wind.

Got back to ABQ at 1 am, 4.5 hours of sleep then work.

Hell of a ride. How was Horsetheif?

b b(great meeting/riding with you too)

Horsethief on Sunday was RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD! I conquered a couple of sections that I've been trying for the last two years, so that was cool. One of those was the drop down into Horsethief, the other was all of that stuff over where you squeeze between the tree. I got that, the stack AND the tough section right before the climb in that area. :D Mainly I was just SUPER stoked to have ridden the entrance before it got worse next year.

As for our trip home, well, it was just that... a trip. We developed an engine problem near the top of Vail pass that nearly stopped us dead. We were overheating and boiling over, but managed to let it cool and limp up and over (as numerous ppl we knew cruised by). We managed to get it to Boulder where we used Ericthebrown's pc for Contour.org access, diagnosed the problem and I installed a waterpump/thermostat combo the next morning. :) Tada! all fixed.

We'll have to meet up again this summer for another ride. Angelfire maybe?

wow that's one tough ride homebrianc

I take it Kristian didn't drive home that night.

AngleFire definatly. the Chilie Challenge DH race is weekend of June 7th. I think that might be my first trip up there. I think the non-race day would be a good time to check out the DH runs. The other days of that weekend will be spend scouting trails for Gaspin'.
