Just got this message from Radar regarding the maintenance (and, yes, sanitation) we're seeing on some trails:

South Mountain is first and formost a preserve. Preserving our trails for the future is extremely important to us. Much of what is fun is not good land managment.

Much of what has been done is for purposes of erosion control. We want these trails to be here 100 years from now. We must balance what is interesting with what is sustainable.

If the West Loop Connector north of the North Ramada is left alone it will continue to rut to the point of needing to be closed or re routed a few years down the road. Unlike our massive national forrests we have very little land to work with. Re-routing trails in our very hostile terrain is dificult(and often inpracticle)and very costly.

Rehabilitating closed area is just as difficult and costly. In general we want the eastern lower trails to be less technical. This allows less advanced users to enjoy the preserve. More remote areas are generally allowed to be more challenging for the enjoyment of more advanced users.

There are no plans I know of to to "sanitize" the whole thing. The trails will always be varied and interesting. If some of us lose a fun spot, but in return keep our trails open and healthy it is a small price.

Remember, these trails are for kids and adults, walker, hikers, horses and us! The preserve is there to protect the geological, biological, and historicic treasure we are so fortunate to have open to us. We all have to give and take a little.

I'm going to discuss it with him more in person, but there you have it. It's deliberate, but hopefully restricted to making the easy trails even easier.

SoMo is off my list, at least on the weekends.

More news from Radar:

The guiding philosophy at the park is to downgrade the difficulty of the trails NEAR THE TRAILHEADS while at the same time improving sustainability and drainage. The hill up to the overlook just north of the North Ramada was apparently getting pretty rutted from people going too fast; there were also user conflicts (idiot bikers bombing down and scaring hikers / idiot hikers overreacting to fast bikers -- take your pick).

Re. the drop at the end of the dirt road, past the stone buildings: People were endo'ing off the end (no duh!), and again there were apparently drainage problems.

Other than those locations, expect very few other changes. Apparently the work isn't complete, and this is the last weekend they'll work because of the heat.
