A Fruita Roadtrip, Part II, Moabilisciousness.(43 posts)

A Fruita Roadtrip, Part II, Moabilisciousness.Pete.

"Moab sucks, there's no singletrack"

Just keep telling people that to keep them away.

When we left our heroes in the last episode, they were bunked down in squalor in Cedar City, UT.

A new day has dawned and we're in Moab to hook up with Joey Jo Shabadu for some Amasa Back action that includes one of Hfly's trails.

Enjoy the pics from the classic Amasa Climb because most of the pics that were taken are rated Top Secret and not for public distribution.

Before I post up the pics let me just say that Hfly's trail and the Amasa Back Singletrack rival any technical singletrack that Ive ridden and the views send them right to the top of the list.

Here are the La Sals from Amasa

...for not airing that drop!
IIRC, the landing was nasty.Pete.
Apr 29, 2003 12:29 PM
I'll have to look at the pics that didn't make the cut to verify.

The huckstresses that were with us didn't air it either, so that might be why.
Landing larger/steeper than the roll in....Zonic Man

I'm sure if you were a WC pro with a big bike, it would be possible, but there was WAY too much room for error (or death) if you didn't land perfectly.
The landing zone.Pete.
Apr 29, 2003 3:34 PM
yeah, i can see how that would curb yr air impulsenarlus
Apr 29, 2003 7:05 PM
btw, what's IIRC mean?
IIRC is geek speak for "If I Recall Correctly"Pete.
Apr 29, 2003 7:06 PM
Marc is even more air-challenged than I am so the landing didn't matter in the least...

Looks like some Vees for backup? I'm considering that too if I finally go disc, looks like he has a spare cable set? Given those hills looks like spare brakes might indeed be smart!

Considering that he's trapped in alcohol-challenged Utah, he needed some help hydrating.

After the ride, we got down to basics.Pete.
Apr 29, 2003 10:37 AM
We noticed a bunch of dots up the canyon and they started jumping.

This is a sequence of one guy's jump.

Except for one guy, they all jumped and their chutes immediately deployed.
That other guy.Pete.
Apr 29, 2003 10:41 AM
This was scary and I don't know if it was planned or not.

This guy was in free wall, diving, almost 2/3s of the way down the face.

You can compare his progress to the other shot, note the V notch with vegetation to the right.
That will get the heart rate up.Colby

nIce pics of the base jumpers. That must have been something else to see.
I think that's how BASE jumpers show the size....radair
Apr 29, 2003 6:16 PM
...of their nads.

I climbed El Capitan in 1985. On our second day on the wall, four BASE jumpers went screaming past us, the wind chattering so loud against their flight suits I'll never forget it. A really scary sight from very close range.

The last guy didn't pop his cute until he was almost 1,000 feet below us, after maybe 2,000 feet of freefall. I thought sure he was going to crater, but he pulled it off and they all ran across the Merced and got into a waiting pick-up truck.

That's a sickness that I think there's no cure for.
And finally, before the ride, while at Poison SpiderPete.

We ran into this nutty Fruitian, Barent.

He and his buddy Jerry had just finished the kokopelli from Fruita to Moab including one day were it took them 9 hours of pushing their bikes (with 100 pound Bob trailer loads) to climb 7 miles into a nasty hurricane-like headwind all.

He still had a certain glow about him.

We'll be heading out your way at the end of May. Do you have any body parts that belong on the inside that you'd like to have pop through the skin for us this time?

Yeah, I'm intact and I'd like to keep all my body parts inside this time. I don't need anymore disgusting wounds to entertain you guys with.

I broke my Foes a few days before they got here, and I wasn't up to hitting that on my HT, but yup, I have hit that. Its even smoother than the other Super 8 jumps, and has the gap bonus.

Nice picture, thats a good angle.
I know where my next 'out of state' trip is.Kitchenware

There are moves and drops up there that make this one look cake-ish.

Oh, I mean the riding here sucks, its crowded and played out.
