Driving tune suggestions!(40 posts)

Driving tune suggestions!Gazz

Doing a road trip from Vancouver BC to Whitefish, Montana this weekend. I'm interested (er, desperate) to hear your driving tune suggestions!

Others on the trip have more delicate sensibilities than mine, so the Dead Kennedy's "Buzzbomb from Pasadena" won't be in the mix. Damn.

You wouldn't want to be in the middle of nowhere enjoying your polka and suddenly be taken by the urge for some good kielbasa.

Steve Miller's Greatest Hits (Joker, Keep on Rocking, Take the Money and Run, etc.) and Van Morrison's Greatest Hits Vol. 2...

Lately, it's been Wilco Yankee Front Hotel (thanks in part to this board).

Also, my CD case has the following: Any of a number of Grateful Dead Dick's Picks, Oysterhead (an acquired taste probably best left for a late night, and headphones), Cracker Golden Age, Jimi Hendrix Greatest Hits, Ben Folds Five Naked Baby Pictures, Primus (I play Jerry was a Race Car Driver over and over), and Hepcat (check them out, it's a "fun" album).

Ooh! John Tesh AND polka. This isn't a road trip anymore -- this is the trip up-river to Cambodia in Apocalypse Now.

Primus! I've been threatening to play "Winona's Big Brown Beaver" at dinner parties.

Those are the two I never hit the road without. James McMurtry is good stuff, too. Have a great trip, whatever you listen to.

Yea! Good choices.. Chris Thile from Nickel is awesome, have you heard any of his solo stuff?

Going to Telluride BGF this year??

Live DMB without a doubt!bob

I refuse to drive any long distances without any one of the live, double CD, Dave Mathews Band discs. Take your pick...Live at Redrocks, Listener Supported, or, the most recent, Live in Chicago (best version of #41 ever), or if you're feeling accoustic Live at Luther College.

Oh Yeah I agree! My Favorite at the moment has actually been:Trevor!

Busted Stuff - Love it when I am driving.

41 Happens to be a favorite song of mine so I will have to get the Live in Chicago CD!

Damm I love DMB! Carter Beauford rocks!!!!!

are a few of the CD's i'm listening to right now. Talk about a wide range of music! All good listening too.

If you are gonna ride (if the snow is melted up high yet?) stop by Glacier Cyclery in whitefish and ask for Jan or Leet for the beta on the local goods. Have fun!

will do. My riding time will be directly proportional to the amount of time my wife spends in a languorous stupor at the spa. This one's gonna cost me.
Excellent choices! Here's some more: Arling & Cameron...Dave W.
Apr 29, 2003 3:07 PM
Arling & Cameron "All In" -- truly bizzare, but one of the all-time great road CDs.

Thievery Corporation "The Richest Man in Babylon" "Mirror Conspiracy"

Brazzaville "Somnambulista" and "2002"

Nicola Conte "Jet Sounds"

Cibo Matto "Stereotype A"

BT "Movement In Still Life" "ESCM" "Ima"

Bebel Gilberto "Tanto Tempo"

Zuco 103 "Tales of High Fever"

Si*Se' "Si*Se'"

St. Germain "Tourist" "Boulevard"

Greyboy "Mastered the Art" "Freestylin"

Greyboy Allstars -- heck, pick any

Ian Pooley "Since Then"
Nice...2melow

we obviously have very similar tastes in music - i'll have to pick up the ones you mentioned not on my list.

BTW, I love St. Germain Tourist. Haven't gotten Boulevard *yet*.

Another real trippy night driving cd we enjoy is B-Tribe

"!Spiritual,Spiritual!" Anything from B-Tribe is good.

Like old school rap? A Tribe Called Qwest "Midnight Marauders" is one everyone must add to their collection too...
Absolutely...Dave W.
Apr 29, 2003 6:49 PM
Yup, already have Midnight Marauders. :-) No B-Tribe, though ... thanks.
Little bit o' cheesezen.
Apr 29, 2003 3:03 PM
How bout:

The String Cheese Incident - A String Cheese Incident .. Killer live show, great to drive to.

Credence Clearwater Revival greatest hits vol. 1 & 2

And I second the Nickel Creek suggestion..or how bout some Ricky Skaggs - History of the Future

As with others I'm sure, my tastes change. BUT, currently my 10 CD trip would have:

Morphine - Cure for Pain

Cake

Phish - Farmhouse

Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom

Jon Spencer Blues-X - orange (anybody else think Suby picked a great tune for the Lance commercials?)

Fugazi - anything, but probably 13 Songs or Steady Diet of Nothing

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

Pressure 4-5

Kasey Chambers

Southern Culture on the Skids - Dirt Track Date

And of course nobody should be allowed to leave without some Reverend Horton Heat. I know it's technically 11, but the Rev counts as religion, so sue me.

true! but I have pretty diverse tastes, so it's all good. As well, I need a mix of hopped-up stuff to encourage speeding and some mellow oddities for the wee hours. Lots of stuff suggested that I don't know, so I'll be sure to check it out.
I don't leave home without:mad rhetorik
Apr 29, 2003 6:32 PM
Ramones: Leave Home (hehe) Rocket To Russia

Fugazi: 13 Songs, Repeater, or In On The Kill Taker

Queens Of The Stone Age: Songs For The Deaf

Pixies: Surfer Rosa, Doolittle

Tool: Undertow or Lateralus

King Crimson: Red

Pink Floyd: Animals

Clash: self-titled (UK)

White Stripes: Elephant

The Who: Live At Leeds

Apr 29, 2003 7:49 PM
it's a made-up soundtrack to the movie _2 lane blacktop_, which has a plethora of great bands. from the Forced Exposure website:

"The tribute album to Monte Hellman's cult favorite Two-Lane Blacktop. Featuring new exclusive tracks by Wilco, Sonic Youth, Will Oldham/Alan Licht, Calexico, Giant Sand plus Suntanama, Charalambides, Mark Eitzel/Marc Capelle, Roy Montgomery, Alvarius B. and Steffen Basho-Junghans. Also includes rare tracks by Cat Power, Roscoe Holcomb, Leadbelly and Sandy Bull."

this is great listening.

Current rotation in the car includes:

Mabel Mabel - Self titled (Local Chicago Band)

Greatful Dead - American Beauty

Moby - Play

North Mississippi All Stars - 51 Fantom

Tom Petty - Greatest Hits

And this gem that I got at a Critical Mass ride last summer. While not everyone agrees about the goals of CM, they put together a fun CD that's all bicycle/traffic related...

How about Oi Polloi, or SubHumans, MDC,.......old Oi Punk

My fave's for looong road trips:

Radiohead - The Bends (sort of an acquired taste but GREAT)

Ben Harper!! - Fight for Your Mind / Diamonds on the Inside

JGB - the double live album (Dead but no JGB - for shame!)

Dave Brubeck - Take Five (one of the greatest starter jazz albums)

Willy Porter - self titled or Dog Eared Dream (awe-inspiring acoustic)

Morcheeba - Big Calm (GREAT GREAT relaxing low-key famale vocals)

This is all I can bring to mind presently but we had VERY similiar tastes and I think these would be good matches - ENJOY and safe travels!

I probably will take Dave & Miles along for the ride. Actually saw Dave Brubeck live last year - GREAT performance. Minimal stage-diving.

Hmmm. Must check out Morcheeba.
