| In defense of Rev Bubba's wrenching policy | Mr Magoo May 29, 2003 11:54 AM | | A short while back I smirked thru a thread debating dropping the rig off to have a bash guard installed. I've always done as much wrenching as I can as a self-preservation in the wild policy. The more experience..... plus, I don't have to schlep, drop off, schedule a pick up, etc. Rather, I do repairs within my sched, bike in hand for the spontaneous. (I own 2 MTB's). I also change the oil in 3 car family fleet myself for the same reason.
Counterpoint. I spent hours and hours trying to get a howl out of my rear XT disc hub. Gave up. Dropped off at LBS. $33 for a XT freehub and $15 labor later, Everything purrs. Smooth. Impressive. This is not the first example, either. Hours fussing with a derailler only to have the LBS point out a bent hanger. More, too.
Its good to have the pros backing you up. Its all good. |
| A bash gaurd? | Stick May 29, 2003 12:00 PM | | must have missed that thread but, c'mon rev! It's 5 bolts, maybe 4!
eh, what do I know? haven't taken a bike to a shop for service in many years.
Glad your hub's fixed, Magoo. |
| thanks, I hope my facts are straight. nm | Mr Magoo May 29, 2003 12:13 PM | | |
| Depends on the bashguard and crank. | Twilight Error® May 29, 2003 4:33 PM | | There are some combinations that just don't go together well. Blackspire and Specialized, for example. I usually end up modifying the guard to fit over the crankarm, its not a big deal, but for someone that doesn't have the tools it can be a problem. Salsa and ToothFairy guards take creative shimming to keep the derailluer from rubbing... |
| Stick, there was not a thread on that subject specifically. | Rev Bubba May 30, 2003 4:41 AM | | What I did mention was that I got a bash guard and my LBS installed it for free and adjusted my derailuer while they were at it. Sorry, but free is good and as the man said, it is nice to have a pro look over the bike now and than. Whole thing with bash guard, tax, installation and derailuer adjustment came to $30 and my LBS is close enough for me to stop in on the way home from the train station.
The reality is that I do most of my own maintenance, i.e. lubes to tubes etc. I never write about all the times I change from one handle bar to another because there isn't much of a story there. Not a whole lot of story in other basic bits of work done on a bike by most of us so all you will see in my write-ups tend to relate to a longer thread.
I'm not the bumbling idiot maintenance wise that you may preceive but I am also not going to claim to have skills much above a pack of monkey's. However, bikes being relatively simple, even a pack of monkey's can do quite a bit of their own work.
Hell's Bell's, if this rain does not stop, I'm going to have enough time to build my own frame pretty soon. Another Saturday and Sunday of rain predicted in north Jersey. Same for you? |
| Carpe Diem, rev! | Stick May 30, 2003 5:45 AM | | Beautiful sunny day today, s'posed to hit 80F this afternoon. I'll be riding tonight, no doubt. I think our forecast is bleak for the weekend too, but there are trails about 12 miles from here that drain really fast and hold up well even when wet (most of the time, anyhow). I'll get some saddle time in one way or the other. |
| Yes, Carpe Diem! | Rev Bubba May 30, 2003 7:10 AM | | Riding the trails around my house tonight. I should hit them by 6 pm if the trains run on time. |
